Group B of the Copa Libertadores 2026 goes down to the wire on 27 May when Universitario host Deportes Tolima at Estadio Monumental in Lima, with kick off at 20:30 local time (00:30 UTC). Coquimbo Unido sit top on 10 points, Tolima are second on seven and Universitario are third on five. Universitario need a win and favourable results elsewhere to advance, Tolima need only a draw to confirm their place in the round of 16. The first leg in Ibagué on 7 April ended goalless, so everything is still to be decided in front of 80,000 in Lima.

Héctor Cúper took charge of Universitario on 11 May 2026 on a contract running to December 2027. The Argentine's résumé spans Valencia, Inter Milan and various national team roles and his sides tend to defend with clear structure and build patiently rather than speculate. On the other bench, Lucas González Vélez has led Tolima since 22 June 2025, building the side around a 4-2-3-1 that leans on organised counter attacking and the two coaches have never faced each other before.

Universitario come in having struggled for consistency, solid enough at home in Liga 1 but unconvincing in continental fixtures, with a loss to Coquimbo Unido in this group still fresh in memory. Tolima, by contrast, have been the sharper side in the group, putting three past both Nacional and Coquimbo Unido on their way to seven points while keeping their defensive shape intact even as their Colombian domestic form has been uneven.

Neither side has reported major injuries or suspensions and both camps are expected to field close to their strongest lineups with Tolima sticking to their familiar 4-2-3-1, though some rotation is possible given concurrent domestic schedules.

Universitario will want to press high and make use of the atmosphere, with dead ball situations likely to be their clearest path to goal against a side that defends deep and narrow. The noise inside Estadio Monumental will test Tolima's concentration at set pieces in particular. Tolima's group stage performances point to a side that gets compact quickly and looks to exploit transitions and the central zone is where those competing approaches will collide most directly.

The only meaningful data point between these two sides is April's goalless draw in Ibagué, which tells you something about how Tolima approach away fixtures when a result suits them.

A 1-1 draw looks the most likely outcome. Universitario will have the better of possession and probably create more chances but Tolima only need a point and the difficulty of breaking them down in open play is real. The first leg stalemate already showed how cautious the visitors can be when a draw suits them and nothing about their group stage form suggests that changes here. Expect Universitario to find a goal, only to be pegged back by one of those sharp Tolima counter attacks, a frustrating outcome for the home side but probably the result their group stage form has been pointing toward all along.
