Canada and Morocco meet in the Round of 16 at NRG Stadium in Houston on 4 July, Canada playing their first ever knockout match as a co host nation while Morocco look to extend a run that already took them past the Netherlands on penalties. Morocco are the 2022 runners up and the bookmakers' favourites here by some distance, given their FIFA ranking and tournament pedigree but Canada have already done more than anyone expected on home soil and Marsch has used that to build internal belief in a squad that was written off before the group stage opened.

Jesse Marsch took charge of Canada in May 2024, the first American to manage the national side, building the team around relentless high pressing and aggressive transitions. Mohamed Ouahbi replaced Walid Regragui in March 2026 and shifted Morocco toward a more possession based 4-2-3-1. The two have never faced each other as senior managers, making this their first proper tactical test against one another.

Canada's last five matches covered a 6-0 demolition of Qatar, a 1-0 win over South Africa sealed by Eustaquio in the 92nd minute, a 1-1 draw with Bosnia and Herzegovina and a 1-2 group stage loss to Switzerland. The pressing numbers have been impressive (over 100 final third pressures in a single half at one point), though their finishing has been streaky, which matters in knockout football. Morocco come in unbeaten across nine matches since the 2025 AFCON final defeat to Senegal, nine matches that included holding Brazil to a draw in the group stage and a penalty win over the Netherlands after a 1-1 draw. Their 801 completed passes in the round of 32 alone tell their own story.

Both sides are largely fit with no major suspensions. Canada welcome Alphonso Davies back after earlier fitness concerns though Ismael Kone remains out long term with a leg injury. There are selection calls on the left wing (Jacob Shaffelburg or Liam Millar) and up front alongside Jonathan David, where Promise David, Cyle Larin and Tani Oluwaseyi are all in contention, while Richie Laryea is expected at left back. Morocco should have Chadi Riad available after his minor scare against the Netherlands, with Redouane Halhal and Marwane Saadane as cover and new Bayern Munich signing Ismael Saibari in the attacking line. Expected lineups: Canada - Crepeau, Johnston, Bombito, Cornelius, Laryea, Buchanan, Saliba, Eustaquio, Shaffelburg, David, Oluwaseyi. Morocco - Bono, Hakimi, Diop, Riad, Mazraoui, El Aynaoui, Bouaddi, Chair, Ounahi, El Khannouss, Saibari.

Canada will press high and look to play on the counter, which has worked well for them but also requires absorbing possession for long stretches. Morocco under Ouahbi have moved toward controlling the ball rather than sitting back and their 4-2-3-1 double pivot of El Aynaoui and Bouaddi is designed to give them that control in central areas. The flank battle is where this game may be decided, with Davies looking to drive inside from the left while Hakimi and Mazraoui push high on both flanks. Up front, Jonathan David against Riad and Diop will matter in transition and Marsch has pointed to Canada's fitness advantage after Morocco needed 120 minutes to beat the Netherlands, something that would matter most if this goes deep into a second half or beyond.

Canada have never beaten Morocco in senior men's football, with Morocco winning their 2022 World Cup group stage meeting 2-1 and a 2016 friendly 4-0.

Canada have been direct and organised from dead balls throughout this tournament, targeting runners at the near post from wide deliveries and Morocco's aerial defence will be tested if this stays level into the final quarter. Houston's heat could work in Canada's favour if the game extends into extra time and Morocco's legs from their previous 120 minutes start to tell. Marsch has talked openly about his side having nothing to lose in the knockout rounds and Canada's performance after going a goal down against Switzerland, when they pressed higher and moved the ball faster than at any point in the group stage, suggests that freedom is not just a talking point.

0-0. These are two teams far better at not conceding than they are at scoring and Morocco's possession dominance against Canada's pressing intensity feels like a recipe for a tense, tight, fairly dull 90 minutes. Neither side has been clinically sharp in front of goal when it mattered, Morocco are running on tired legs after extra time and Canada's energy could keep this level without ever quite breaking through. Morocco's fatigue and Canada's lack of cutting edge in the final third both point toward a shootout and Crepeau's record from the spot in this tournament makes that a reasonable place for Canada to fancy their chances.
