Víkingur Reykjavík host Győri ETO at Víkingsvöllur on 7 July 2026 in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League first qualifying round, with the return fixture a week later in Hungary. Both clubs arrive as domestic champions chasing a maiden group stage appearance, with the winner facing Hapoel Be'er Sheva in the next round and neither side having ever reached the league phase of Europe's top club competition.

Sölvi Ottesen leads Víkingur while Efraín Juárez only took charge of Győri ETO around 19 June 2026, arriving with assistants Alex Larrea, Luis Pérez and Zoltán Lipták and the two coaches have no prior record against each other in their current roles.

Víkingur come into this having won 15 of their last 16 matches across all competitions, unbeaten at home throughout 2026 with 12 wins and three draws. They closed 2025 with a six game winning streak and beat KA Akureyri 3-2 on 2 July, though they have conceded six goals over their last three outings, which will give Győri some encouragement about finding gaps on the counter.

Győri ETO arrive with limited competitive minutes after nearly two months without fixtures. Their NB I title winning campaign showed they can grind out results over a long season but pre season draws against Grazer AK and wins over Vojvodina tell us little about their readiness for a knockout tie after that long a break without competitive football.

Víkingur may be forced into a goalkeeping change after first choice Aron Snaer Fridriksson picked up a late injury in their most recent league game, leaving 37 year old new signing Ogmundur Kristinsson as the likely starter with no suspensions elsewhere in the squad and Gylfi Sigurdsson continuing to score freely.

Győri ETO will be without Ahmed Nadhir Benbouali, who scored 15 goals last season but is away on World Cup duty with Algeria, leaving Szabolcs Schön, recently signed on a permanent deal, to lead the line in his absence.

Expected lineups reflect those adjustments. Víkingur are likely to go with Kristinsson behind Atlason, Ekroth, Vatnhamar and Gudjonsson, with Borgthorsson, Ingimundarson, Ibrahimagic and Sigurdsson in midfield and Omarsson and Thrandarson up front. Győri ETO are projected to start Petrás behind Štefulj, Csinger, Krpic and Vlădoiu, with Vitális and Tóth in central midfield and Bumba, Gavrić and Bánáti supporting striker Njie.

Víkingur at home press high and transition quickly, using the compact Víkingsvöllur pitch and a loud crowd to their advantage, with Sigurdsson and Omarsson running in behind Győri's back three of Csinger, Krpic and Vlădoiu.

Győri rely on counter attacks built through Bumba and Schön in transition and Štefulj and Gavrić will need to compensate for Benbouali's absence across the front line. Víkingur field three central midfielders in Ibrahimagic, Ingimundarson and Borgthorsson against Győri's two of Vitális and Tóth, a numerical advantage in the centre that plays directly into a high press system. The goalkeeping picture is worth watching given Kristinsson stepping in at short notice opposite Győri's Samuel Petrás or Balázs Megyeri.

These clubs have no modern meetings, though they did cross paths in the 1983/84 European Cup when Győri won both legs 4-1 on aggregate. Four decades on, with entirely different squads and contexts, that tells us next to nothing.

Víkingur's set piece routines have been sharpened over a dominant domestic season and could cause problems for a Győri defence that has had two months without a competitive match and now faces a high press home side on artificial turf. Győri have more continental experience in the squad but that rustiness is a real concern, particularly given the hostile crowd and unfamiliar surface at Víkingsvöllur.

We're going with 2-2. Víkingur have won 12 of 15 home games in 2026 and are unbeaten at Víkingsvöllur this year, which counts for a lot in a one off knockout tie but Győri's defensive organisation and counter attacking quality through Bumba and Schön should give them enough to score. Víkingur's recent defensive frailty, six conceded in three games, combined with Győri's counter attacking runners makes goals at both ends the most logical outcome and a 2-2 would mean Győri need at least a draw in Hungary to advance while Víkingur head to Budapest knowing a defeat puts them out.
