Connah's Quay Nomads host FC Ballkani at Llanelian Road on 8 July 2026 in the first leg of a UEFA Conference League first qualifying round tie, with the aggregate winner advancing to the second round. The Nomads earned their place as Cymru Premier runners up with 58 points from 32 games and a plus 23 goal difference, finishing behind champions The New Saints, while Ballkani arrive as third placed finishers in the Kosovo Superleague, also on 58 points but from 36 matches, after a season in which Drita claimed the title and Malisheva took the other Conference League berth.

This is Connah's Quay's first European campaign under John Disney and Ballkani bring multiple Conference League group stage appearances with them, making them the more experienced side at this level. Disney guided his side to the runners up spot in his first season and won manager of the year, so the home dugout has some credibility behind it but Mislav Karoglan, who took charge of Ballkani in November 2025, brings European knowhow Disney simply has not had the chance to accumulate yet. The two managers have never faced each other.

Connah's Quay closed the domestic season well and opened pre season with a 1-0 friendly win over Queen of the South with Abdi Sharif getting the goal, which is about as much recent activity as there is to go on. Ballkani's pre season has been uneven: a 1-0 win against Hebar Pazardzhik, then losses to Botev Plovdiv (0-2) and Sileks (0-4), shipping six goals across those two defeats. Their 2025/26 European run included wins and draws against Floriana before a heavy loss to Shamrock Rovers, which tells you something about their ceiling and their floor.

Both squads appear fully fit with no injuries or suspensions reported. Connah's Quay are expected to line up in a 4-2-3-1, with Renshaw in goal behind a back four of Simatupang, Ferguson, Hughes and Jones and Deane and Sharif holding in midfield. Ballkani favour a 4-3-3, with Golubovic in goal, a defensive line of Dosso, Halili, Batarelo and Vokrri and Kuc, Giovanni and Diene through the middle supporting forwards Tolaj, Serebe and Hamidi.

Harry Franklin leads the line with 13 goals and 11 assists from last season and Sharif offers drive from midfield. Ballkani's front three is where the real danger lies: Bleart Tolaj, Valentin Serebe and Walid Hamidi all finished the season in double figures and Hughes, Jones and Flynn will have their work cut out. Deane and Sharif against Kuc, Giovanni and Diene is the midfield contest that shapes everything else, while Franklin's aerial ability at set pieces is something Halili and Batarelo will need to manage carefully. The clubs have never met before, leaving both managers to work things out as they go.

Connah's Quay's defensive structure and Franklin's presence in the air make set pieces a genuine threat and probably their clearest path to a goal. Ballkani shipped six goals in two pre season losses, though reading too much into those results against Bulgarian and Macedonian opposition is a risk. What the league season does confirm is that their front three combined for more than 30 goals and that is the most reliable indication of the threat Disney's back four will face.

Connah's Quay 2-1 Ballkani. The visitors' front three combined for more than 30 league goals and they have operated at this level before but the Nomads have home advantage and a set piece game that can hurt anyone at Llanelian Road. Ballkani are good enough to take an away goal and give themselves something to work with in the return leg, though a one goal deficit away from home is a difficult position for a side whose own European record suggests the second leg at home is very much winnable. Whether they can produce enough in Kosovo to turn it round depends on whether this Ballkani side is closer to the one that beat Floriana or the one that lost heavily to Shamrock Rovers.
