Group E wraps up on 25 June at MetLife Stadium with Germany already through on six points and looking to finish the group stage with a perfect record. Ecuador's situation is far more desperate: one point from two games means only a win gives them any realistic shot at advancing as one of the better third placed sides.

Sebastián Beccacece and Julian Nagelsmann have never faced each other as managers, with Beccacece taking charge of Ecuador in August 2024 and Nagelsmann having led Germany since September 2023, his contract running through the tournament and beyond.

Ecuador have carried a 19 game unbeaten run under Beccacece into this tournament, built on defensive solidity and clean sheets in friendlies against Guatemala and Saudi Arabia, though they are yet to win a group game. Germany have been in a different gear entirely, extending an 11 game winning run with nine goals across two group stage thrashings of Curaçao and Ivory Coast while pressing high throughout.

Ecuador have no major injury concerns and Beccacece is expected to stick with his compact 4 3 3 featuring Hernán Galíndez in goal, William Pacho and Piero Hincapié in defence and Moisés Caicedo anchoring the midfield. Germany will be without Nico Schlotterbeck through injury and Nagelsmann is likely to rotate around him, with Oliver Baumann potentially starting in goal, Angelo Stiller in midfield and Deniz Undav leading the attack alongside the likes of Jamie Leweling.

Ecuador under Beccacece sit deep, protect the shape and try to nick something through Caicedo's midfield control, set pieces or the odd counter. It's not pretty but it has produced results. Germany operate on a completely different level of ambition: Nagelsmann's 4 2 3 1 presses high and rotates positions fluidly and the central contest between Germany's creative players and Ecuador's backline, anchored by Hincapié and Pacho, will likely decide whether Ecuador can hold them to something narrow.

Germany have won both previous meetings: a 3 0 group stage victory at the 2006 World Cup and a 4 2 friendly in 2013, with Ecuador yet to register a win in the fixture.

Ecuador's best route to a goal runs through set pieces and organised transitions. Germany have shown they can be caught in moments and set pieces give Ecuador a realistic route to goal even if everything else points against them.

Germany 2 1 Ecuador. Even with rotation, Germany have too much quality in depth to drop points here and Ecuador have not scored once in this tournament. That said, Beccacece's defensive setup has kept clean sheets in friendlies and held shape across two group games, so if Ecuador are to leave with anything it will likely come from a set piece late on before Germany ultimately wrap up top spot.
