Switzerland and Colombia meet in the last round of 16 fixture at the 2026 FIFA World Cup on 7 July at BC Place in Vancouver, both unbeaten. Switzerland got here with a 2-0 win over Algeria having conceded just one goal across the tournament, while Colombia beat Ghana 1-0 and kept three clean sheets along the way. The winner goes to the quarterfinals, which would be Switzerland's first appearance at that stage since 1954, or Colombia going one better than their 2014 run.

Murat Yakin has been in charge of Switzerland since August 2021, while Néstor Lorenzo took over Colombia in June 2022 and guided them to the 2024 Copa América final. Neither man has faced the other as a coach, so both are going in without any lived tactical experience of the other.

Switzerland have conceded just once in four matches, with Breel Embolo and Granit Xhaka the standouts in a system that rarely wastes energy. Colombia have been similarly solid defensively but more willing to take risks going forward and the 1-0 win over Ghana was grinding rather than pretty. The one concern for Lorenzo is wastefulness in front of goal, which has come up more than once.

Colombia's main problem is Jhon Córdoba's absence through a muscle tear, leaving a gap up front that Luis Suárez or Cucho Hernández will need to fill, with Switzerland having no injury concerns. Switzerland line up in a 4-2-3-1 with Gregor Kobel behind a back four of Denis Zakaria, Manuel Akanji, Nico Elvedi and Ricardo Rodríguez, Remo Freuler and Granit Xhaka in a double pivot and Dan Ndoye, Johan Manzambi and Ruben Vargas behind Breel Embolo. Colombia set up in a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 with Camilo Vargas in goal, Jhon Mojica, Jhon Lucumi, Davinson Sánchez and Daniel Muñoz in defence, Jhon Arias, Jefferson Lerma and Gustavo Puerta in midfield and Luis Díaz alongside a replacement for Córdoba and James Rodríguez.

Xhaka and Freuler sit deep in a double pivot, screening the back four and slowing play through the middle when Switzerland don't have the ball. If that pairing wins the midfield contest against Lerma, Puerta and Arias, Colombia's attacks become more predictable. Díaz's pace will test Ricardo Rodríguez particularly on the Swiss left and Embolo's physicality is the kind of problem Sánchez and Lucumi haven't always handled cleanly this tournament.

The most notable meeting between these sides was the 1994 World Cup group stage, when Colombia won 2-0. Colombia hold a narrow overall edge across tracked fixtures, two wins, one draw and one loss, though most of those games were friendlies of limited relevance and both managers will be working largely from video analysis rather than lived experience of the other team.

We're going with 2-2. Switzerland will probably be the better team in the first half, controlling midfield and nicking an opener from a set piece, where Embolo's physical presence makes him a genuine danger. Colombia will respond, with a Díaz run or a Rodríguez delivery from a dead ball situation the likeliest route back into it. Once it's level again, both teams will push for the winner and a second goal each seems the most likely outcome, so it goes to extra time and probably penalties.
