The Netherlands meet Morocco in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32 at Estadio BBVA in Monterrey, a straight knockout where the winner goes through to the last 16 and the loser goes home. Both sides reached this stage unbeaten: the Netherlands topped Group F after beating Sweden 5-1 and Tunisia 3-1 before drawing with Japan, while Morocco came through Group C with wins over Scotland and Haiti and a draw against Brazil. It sets up a contest between a Dutch side that wants to dominate possession and a Moroccan outfit content to sit deep and spring forward once they win the ball back.

Ronald Koeman has been in charge of the Netherlands since January 2023, with Ruud van Nistelrooy among his assistants, while Mohamed Ouahbi only took over Morocco on 5 March 2026 having previously won a FIFA U 20 World Cup with their youth side. The two have never met at senior level.

The Netherlands were clinical in front of goal in the group stage, scoring eight times across their two wins. The draw with Japan was partly explained by rotation and injury concerns carrying over from pre tournament friendlies and did not do much damage to their overall picture. Morocco are harder to read because their strengths do not always show up in scorelines: they held Brazil, kept their defensive shape throughout the group and looked to hurt teams the moment they could turn and run.

Both squads are carrying injuries that matter. The Netherlands are without Jurriën Timber, Matthijs de Ligt, Jerdy Schouten, Xavi Simons and Stefan de Vrij, Bart Verbruggen is managing a possible hip problem and Memphis Depay has only recently returned from a thigh issue. Morocco are missing Nayef Aguerd and Abde Ezzalzouli with doubts also over Noussair Mazraoui and Ouahbi's squad is somewhat reshaped from the side that reached the semi finals in 2022.

Koeman is likely to line up in a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 with Verbruggen in goal, Virgil van Dijk leading the defensive line, Frenkie de Jong and Ryan Gravenberch anchoring midfield and Cody Gakpo and Donyell Malen as the attacking outlets. Morocco should go 4-2-3-1 with Yassine Bono in goal, Achraf Hakimi at right back and Brahim Díaz and Azzedine Ounahi driving the play in the final third.

The Dutch will want to pin Morocco back, use full back overlaps from Denzel Dumfries and get van Dijk organising from deep, while Gakpo and Malen look to get in behind. Morocco's threat lives in the transition: Hakimi bombing forward on the right and Díaz operating between the lines looking to receive on the turn. The key battles are Hakimi against the Dutch left flank, de Jong and Gravenberch versus Ounahi and El Aynaoui for control of the press trigger (whoever wins that dictates whether Morocco get to counter at all) and van Dijk reading when to step and when to hold his line as Morocco look to flip the play. Dumfries getting forward regularly will test Morocco's right side and every time he pushes up there is a gap in behind for Hakimi to attack from the other end.

These sides have met three times, with the Netherlands leading 2-1. Morocco's win came in the 1994 World Cup group stage and the Dutch won both subsequent friendlies in 1999 and 2017, though neither result tells you much about what happens on Wednesday night.

With both squads thinned by injury, set pieces could end up mattering more than either side would prefer. Van Dijk's combination of height and timing makes him one of the most reliable aerial targets in the tournament from dead ball situations. Monterrey's altitude and heat will compress both sides' pressing windows as the game goes on and late on it may come down to whoever manages to slow things down in possession rather than pressing into fatigue.

Netherlands 2-1 Morocco. The Dutch have the personnel to keep the ball in Morocco's half long enough that chances will come even against a well set defence. Morocco are likely to be happy with 0-0 at half time and will set up to deny space in behind, which means the Dutch may need a set piece to break the deadlock. If van Dijk delivers from a corner, it is hard to see Morocco recovering and while they will pull one back, the Dutch defensive structure should hold.
