The Copa Sudamericana knockout round play offs open with Sporting Cristal hosting RB Bragantino at Estadio Nacional in Lima on 23 July and the winner over two legs advances to the round of 16. Cristal will want to bank something at home before the trip to Bragança Paulista and a goalless draw here would hand Bragantino control of the second leg.

Roberto Mosquera took charge of Cristal in June 2026, replacing Zé Ricardo and bringing a 4-2-3-1 setup with him, while Vágner Mancini has run Bragantino on the same formation since October 2025. The two haven't met in competitive football before, so there's no tactical history to draw from.

Bragantino arrive with Série A form worth noting: a 1-1 draw with Fluminense and a 3-1 win over Internacional suggest they are in decent shape at both ends. Cristal's Liga 1 form is harder to read and that gap in league quality matters in a two legged tie where away goals count.

Cristal are without goalkeeper Renato Solís until September after a cruciate ligament injury, with Leandro Sosa and a few others also sidelined by muscular problems. Bragantino come in with their own lengthy list of absentees: Vanderlan, Gabriel, Fabrício, Matheus Fernandes, Sant'Anna, Bruninho and Davi Gomes, who won't be back until December. The defensive and midfield gaps will likely force rotations.

This is the first competitive meeting between these clubs, so form, squad depth and home advantage are all the analysis has to work with. Bragantino's Red Bull DNA means a high press and retention based game and whether that press can unsettle Cristal's midfield creators early will probably decide how much the Peruvian side gets to build in open play. Cristal's set piece delivery in front of their own crowd is a genuine threat and Lima's altitude tends to favour the home side more than it gets credit for, with visiting squads labouring as fatigue sets in faster than at sea level.

RB Bragantino to win 1-0. Their recent form against top Série A sides and their ability to absorb a lengthy injury list without a dramatic drop in quality both point to a narrow away win. Cristal will push through transitions and set pieces and there is enough home pressure to keep this tight but Bragantino's pressing structure should be enough to nick it.
