Kauno Žalgiris host FC Drita at Darius & Girėnas Stadium on 7 July 2026 in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League first qualifying round tie, with kick off at around 19:00 local time under Icelandic referee Ívar Orri Kristjánsson. The winner advances to the second qualifying round while the loser drops into the Europa League path. Both enter as domestic champions chasing the financial rewards that come with deeper European runs, with the return leg taking place seven days later in Gjilan.

Željko Sopic took charge of Kauno Žalgiris only days before this fixture, replacing Eivinas Černiauskas and bringing experience from spells in Croatia, Azerbaijan, Poland and the UAE. Opposite him sits Zekirija Ramadani, who has led Drita since November 2023 and delivered back to back Kosovo Superliga titles in 2024-25 and 2025-26, though the two have never met in competitive football before.

Kauno Žalgiris arrive having lost narrowly to Žalgiris Vilnius and Banga, drawn with Hegelmann and Džiugas Telšiai and beaten TransINVEST. Drita finished strongly to claim the Kosovo title across 36 matches but their pre season friendlies were a rougher ride, with losses to Sepsi, Lokomotiv Sofia and CSKA 1948, opponents operating well above Lithuanian A Lyga level. The Kosovan champions come in riding domestic momentum, though those defeats suggest their defensive shape may not yet be set.

Neither side has major suspensions but Drita are badly stretched through injury, with Juan Camilo Mesa out on a ligament problem until the end of July, Rron Broja expected back around 15 July from a muscle issue and long term casualties Ilir Mustafa and Hasan Gomda further depleting their central options. Kauno report no prominent absences.

Kauno will likely line up in a 4-4-2 with Shvedkauskas behind a back four of Edokpolor, Mutashi, Tolordava and Rachic, with Baldassarra, Sirgedas, Leonardo and Bensheb in midfield and Burba and Ikaunieks up front. Drita may set up in a 4-3-3 with Maloku in goal, Sheyi, Krasniki, Ovuka and Pelumbi across the back, Beytulai, Limaj and Dabikaj in midfield and Balaj and Tusha leading the line.

Kauno look to dominate the ball at home, with Baldassarra and Sirgedas expected to link play between the lines and Burba and Ikaunieks as the main outlets. Drita play direct and look to transition quickly and with their backline so short handed that approach may actually work in their favour here. Krasniki and Ovuka face a testing night against Kauno's mobile forwards and the central midfield contest between Leonardo and Baldassarra against Limaj and Dabikaj will likely decide who dictates the tempo. Get their press working early and Kauno could threaten the space in behind Ovuka and Krasniki, who have had limited time together as a partnership, while Drita will look to go long toward Tusha and Balaj and avoid a midfield battle they might lose. This is the first competitive meeting between the two clubs, which strips both managers of any tactical reference points from previous encounters.

Set pieces could matter given how many central options Drita are missing and their attackers are a threat from corners and free kicks. The artificial surface at Darius & Girėnas Stadium rewards Kauno's preference for quick combination play in midfield and conditions in early July are usually mild.

The score lands at 2-2, with Kauno's home advantage and healthier squad translating into clear chances against a depleted Drita backline. Burba and Ikaunieks are well positioned to test a back four missing four of its usual options and find the net twice. But Tusha and Balaj will look to run in behind when Kauno push their full backs forward, meaning Drita will create opportunities even shorthanded. Two goals for the visitors, probably from set pieces or rapid breaks, sends both sides to Gjilan knowing a single away goal could swing qualification, with Drita's home advantage in the second leg their strongest remaining card.
