This is Matchday 6 of Copa Libertadores 2026 Group E and the stakes are uneven but real on both sides. Corinthians, already through to the round of 16 with 11 points from five games, still want to finish as one of the top group winners for better seeding and home advantage in the knockouts. Platense sit second on seven points and need at least a draw to guarantee their progression ahead of Independiente Santa Fe, who face Peñarol simultaneously. A defeat for Walter Zunino's side would leave their first Libertadores campaign depending on a favourable result elsewhere, making this a must not lose rather than a nice to win.
Fernando Diniz and Walter Zunino have no head to head record to speak of. Diniz took charge of Corinthians on 6 April following Dorival Júnior's dismissal, returning to a club he once played for as a midfielder in the late 1990s. Zunino has been in the job since November 2025 on a contract through December 2026 and helped deliver Platense's first national title in the 2025 Apertura.

Corinthians arrive in good shape after beating Atlético-MG domestically, lifting them to 15th in the Brasileirão and extending their run at the Neo Química Arena to six consecutive home wins. Their last six across all competitions reads D W W L D W, with a Libertadores record of W W W D D. Platense have been more erratic, going L W L D W L in the league and L W W D L in the group stage.
Corinthians have a few absentees: Hugo is out with a meniscus injury, João Pedro Tchoca has a groin problem, Kaique is recovering from an ACL tear and Vitinho is dealing with a hip issue. Memphis Depay is back from a thigh injury, giving them an attacking option they will want to use before the World Cup break and with qualification already secured, rotation looks likely. Platense are significantly worse off for bodies: Guido Mineiro is suspended and the injury list runs through Tomás Nasif, Kevin Retamar, Víctor Cuesta, Celias Ingenthron, Franco Minerva, Marcos Portilho and Gonzalo Goñi, meaning both sides will field noticeably altered lineups.
Diniz's 'Dinizismo' revolves around constant movement and fluid positional play and Corinthians have conceded just two goals in the group stage despite regularly dominating the ball. Platense are likely to defend deep and look to spring forward quickly on the break, though their depleted squad makes their defensive shape difficult to predict. Memphis Depay dropping into pockets between the lines should give Vázquez and Mendía the most uncomfortable evening they have faced in this group stage, while Corinthians' full backs Pedro Milans and Fabrizio Angileri face the most direct threat from Guido Mainero and Gonzalo Lencina, who are Platense's main wide outlets.

These sides met for the first time at senior level in the reverse fixture on 9 April, when Corinthians won 2-0 in Argentina through goals from Kayke Ferrari and Yuri Alberto. Set pieces could matter given how thin Platense are at the back: Corinthians have been efficient from dead balls throughout the group stage and Gustavo Henrique and Gabriel Paulista are their primary delivery targets.
Predicted score: 1-1. Corinthians are already through, have six straight home wins at the Neo Química Arena and carry a two goal lead from the reverse fixture but the rotation they will likely make combined with Platense needing at least a draw to go through without relying on Independiente Santa Fe dropping points makes a draw entirely plausible. Platense have conceded six goals across their five group stage games and if Mainero or Lencina can find space on the break against a rotated back line, a share of the points is the likeliest outcome. Corinthians will dominate possession for most of the night but may struggle to score twice against a side defending with ten behind the ball and a draw sends both teams through.
