Independiente del Valle vs Rosario Central: Libertadores Group H Decider Preview

Analytical preview of Independiente del Valle vs Rosario Central in the Copa Libertadores 2026 Group H finale, with both sides already qualified.

Our prediction
Independiente Valle
Independiente Valle
1-1
Rosario Central
Rosario Central

Independiente del Valle host Rosario Central at Estadio Banco Guayaquil on 27 May 2026 in a Copa Libertadores Group H closer that still matters even though both sides are already through to the round of 16. Rosario Central are top of the standings, unbeaten after five matches on 13 points and a plus nine goal difference, having conceded nothing in the competition. Independiente del Valle trail on 10 points and need a 3-0 win or better to take first place and the seeding that comes with it.

Joaquín Papa took charge of Independiente del Valle in December 2025 and faces Jorge Almirón, who arrived at Rosario Central late in the same year. Their one previous meeting ended in a draw and Almirón's broader record against IDV sides reads two draws and one defeat, a pattern of tight, inconclusive results that suggests neither coach will open up unnecessarily.

IDV have put up some big numbers at home, including a 4-1 win over Libertad in the Libertadores and a 3-0 league victory against Macará, though they also lost 2-0 to UCV. Rosario Central, meanwhile, have been excellent with just one defeat in their last 12 matches, including a 4-0 group stage demolition of UCV.

Independiente del Valle are without Patrik Mercado (cruciate ligament), Guido Villar, Jean Arroyo, Richard Schunke and Juan Cazares, all sidelined with long term knee or leg issues, while Rosario Central are missing Juan Cruz Komar and Juan Giménez for similar extended periods and Gaspar Duarte has missed several recent fixtures. IDV will likely line up in a 4-2-3-1 with Aldair Quintana in goal and Carlos González and Junior Sornoza leading the attack, whereas Rosario Central are expected in a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 anchored by Jeremías Ledesma with Ángel Di María in an advanced role supported by Enzo Copetti and Alejo Veliz.

Papa's IDV side like to build from the back and press high, though Rosario Central work on entirely different terms: they defend in a low block and live off transitions, which explains the clean sheet run. The individual duels are interesting enough on their own: Di María will probe IDV's full backs all night, while González and Emerson Pata need to find a way past Gastón Ávila and Facundo Mallo. The bigger tactical tension, though, is between IDV's need to chase an emphatic result and Rosario Central's capacity to hurt teams that open up, IDV need three goals, which means their defensive shape will deteriorate as the game goes on and Rosario Central's attackers are exactly the kind who benefit from space left behind.

The two sides have met only once competitively, a 0-0 draw in the first leg of this group stage, so there is no established pattern to lean on.

A 1-1 draw. Five games, no goals conceded: IDV would need to do something no side in this group has managed and Rosario Central are well equipped to sit and absorb pressure without needing to chase anything. Pushing hard for a third goal with bench options already thinned by injury leaves IDV exposed to exactly the kind of transition Central thrive on. Both sides advance either way, this one is about terms.
