How the ELO rating works
What it is
One number for a club's current strength on a single scale, so any two clubs are comparable across leagues and countries. Everyone starts equal (~1500) and every difference is earned on the pitch. There is no seeding or manual ranking.
How a match moves it
The winner takes points from the loser - a zero-sum transfer, so the system stays balanced. The swing grows with the difference in quality between the teams, margin, home advantage and stage (continental and knockout weigh most).
Recency importance
Each new result steadily overwrites older ones, so a rating is dominated by the last few seasons' performance. A club in decline hands the points back game by game, and old glory fades.
Kept honest
Wins in a weak league can't inflate a rating - it's held near the league's level until proven against strong sides, mainly in Europe. That hold is tightest for unproven clubs, and only recent proof counts.
Leagues
A league's rating is the average strength of its current top half clubs, with promotion and relegation flowing through automatically. Entire leagues are periodically re-levelled by how their clubs fare abroad.
Scope & updates
Daily updates from results from competitive first-team matches only (no friendlies, youth or reserves); shootouts count as draws.
