ELO head-to-head

How Athletico Paranaense and Vasco da Gama compare on rating, form and history.

Athletico Paranaense host Vasco da Gama in Brazilian Serie A Round 34 on 4 November 2026, with very different things riding on the result. Athletico sit fifth with 54 points from 33 games and need a win to stay in touch with the top four and keep their Libertadores hopes alive, whereas Vasco are 13th on 38 points from 32 games, comfortable enough in mid table but not so comfortable that they can afford to be careless. Odair Hellmann took charge of Athletico on 21 May 2025 after Maurício Barbieri's departure, while Pedro Emanuel arrived at Vasco on 10 July 2026 to replace Renato Gaúcho. The two haven't faced each other enough times to read anything meaningful into a head to head record.

Athletico's last five reads L-D-L-W-D, which doesn't inspire huge confidence: beaten 2-0 at Grêmio on 30 October, a 1-1 draw with Vitória on 24 October, a 2-0 defeat at Palmeiras on 17 October, a 4-1 hammering of Chapecoense on 12 October and a 2-2 draw with Atlético Mineiro on 8 October. Vasco's sequence is L-W-L-D-W: a 4-1 thrashing at Flamengo on 29 October, a win at Corinthians shortly before that, a 1-0 defeat at São Paulo on 18 October, a 0-0 draw with Remo on 10 October and a 2-1 win over Botafogo on 7 October.

Athletico are without Alejandro García (pubis injury) and Claudinho (cruciate ligament), losing midfield drive and defensive cover in one go and while neither absence is catastrophic on its own, Hellmann will feel both. Vasco's list is longer and more damaging, with four players gone from the backline and central areas: Mateus Carvalho won't be back until late November with knee ligament damage, Carlos Cuesta is sidelined until mid November with a hip flexor problem, Andrés Gómez has been absent since late October with a foot and ankle issue and Cauan Barros is also out with a foot injury, leaving Emanuel with no choice but to reshuffle his central areas entirely.

Hellmann's 3-4-2-1 has his wing-backs pushing high and without García and Claudinho, Athletico will be shorter on midfield physicality and defensive cover, so Vasco's forward runners could find pockets of space that wouldn't normally be there. Emanuel's 4-1-4-1 puts a holding midfielder in front of the defence and asks the front four to press high and threaten in transition but with Cuesta, Gómez, Carvalho and Barros all missing, his defensive and midfield units are likely to lack the familiarity and communication that keep a back four tight and hurried clearances and miscommunication are real risks. Kevin Viveros, Athletico's top scorer, is exactly the kind of forward who punishes those moments.

Viveros against Vasco's central defenders is the obvious duel to watch, his runs beyond the last defender a constant threat given how disorganised the Vasco back four figures to be. Going the other way, Colidio and Hinestroza have the pace to exploit the space Athletico leave when their wing-backs push on and Léo Jardim's distribution from goal will matter in launching those transitions before Hellmann's shape can reset.

Athletico lead the all time record with around 14 wins from 33 to 36 meetings, with Vasco winning roughly 10 to 12 and the rest drawn. Vasco won the reverse fixture 1-0 on 10 May 2026. Athletico need three points badly enough to push both wing-backs and their two attacking midfielders into advanced positions, which should open space for Vasco's forwards in behind, while Colidio, Hinestroza and Brenner have enough individual quality to score on the counter even with a weakened squad around them. Both sides have been leaking goals in recent weeks, with Vasco's four defensive absentees compounding the problem and Hellmann's system will struggle to maintain shape when the game opens up without two of his midfielders, making 3-3 the most likely outcome. Athletico stay fifth and their Libertadores push gets harder, Vasco bank a point and stay exactly where they are.
