Atlético Mineiro vs Chapecoense Prediction: Domínguez Side to Overwhelm Relegation Battlers

Detailed tactical preview and 2-0 score prediction for Atlético Mineiro vs Chapecoense in Série A on 19 September 2026.

ELO head-to-head

How Atlético Mineiro and Chapecoense compare on rating, form and history.

Atlético Mineiro host Chapecoense at the Mineirão on 19 September 2026 in a Série A Round 28 fixture that means very different things to each club. Seventh placed Atlético sit on 39 points from 26 games and are still chasing Copa Sudamericana qualification, whereas Chapecoense are rock bottom with 17 points and a relegation fight that is beginning to look less like a fight and more like a formality. The reverse fixture on 2 April ended 4-0 to Atlético, which tells you most of what you need to know about the gap between these two sides.

Eduardo Domínguez took charge of Atlético Mineiro on 27 February 2026, replacing Jorge Sampaoli, while Rafael Lacerda arrived at Chapecoense on 30 May after Fábio Matias departed. Neither coach has faced the other at club level before, so there is no head to head record to draw from.

Chapecoense arrive in poor shape with one win from their last five: a 1-2 defeat at Internacional on 12 September, a narrow 2-1 home win over Corinthians on 6 September, a 1-3 loss at Grêmio on 30 August, a 1-0 defeat at São Paulo on 23 August and a 3-3 draw with Bahia on 16 August, with even that sole victory coming at home against a side hardly in fine form themselves.

Atlético's absentees are concentrated in defence and midfield: Everson is out with a broken foot, Ruan has a hamstring problem, Victor Hugo has a pubic bone bruise, Tomás Pérez is absent with pubic inflammation, Índio has torn knee ligaments and Thiago Borbas has another hamstring issue, which means Domínguez will need to reshuffle his options across the back line and the middle of the park.

Chapecoense's list is longer still and at a certain point it stops being a caveat and starts being the story. Robert Santos is out after an ACL tear, Carvalheira has knee ligament damage, Bruno Tubarão has a hamstring problem, Max is sidelined with a back issue, Vinicius Balieiro has knee ligament trouble, Heitor has another hamstring injury, Yannick Bolasie is absent with pancreas inflammation and João Paulo has tendonitis. Lacerda simply does not have the personnel to organise the defensive block he would want against a side like Atlético and the eight absences strip whatever structure his system relies on.

Domínguez has built Atlético around compact defending, organised pressing and quick vertical transitions, typically in a 4-2-3-1. Renan Lodi's overlapping runs from left back provide width on the flank, Reinier dictates tempo through the middle and Cassierra leads the line. The injuries hurt both sides unevenly: Atlético lose depth at centre back and in central midfield yet retain quality in wide areas and behind the striker, whereas Chapecoense lose most of their defensive and midfield spine, which takes whatever cohesion Lacerda's block had and leaves very little behind.

Chapecoense under Lacerda have tried to defend deep and hit on the counter with occasional success, though against Atlético at the Mineirão with eight first team players missing it is difficult to see how that plan survives beyond the opening half hour. The 4-0 result in April already showed what happens when Chapecoense's shape breaks down and the personnel losses since then have only made that structure thinner.

The most recent meeting makes the head to head argument for itself: a 4-0 home win on 2 April in which Chapecoense were unable to hold their shape. Lacerda now arrives missing much of the midfield spine that gave the block whatever solidity it had and a repeat of that pattern is the most plausible outcome.

Atlético need three points to keep the Sudamericana push credible and Chapecoense need to stop the rot before the season becomes irretrievable. Both sets of incentives push the game in the same direction and Atlético's squad is simply better stocked for it, especially against a visiting side this short of options.

Atlético Mineiro 2-0 Chapecoense. Domínguez's press will target the gaps left by Chapecoense's depleted midfield and once Atlético establish a lead it is hard to see where Lacerda's side finds a route back into the game.
