How Atlético Mineiro and Coritiba compare on rating, form and history.

Atlético Mineiro host Coritiba at the Mineirão on 17 October 2026 in Série A Matchday 31, with both sides having real reasons to care about the result. Seventh with 47 points from 30 games, Atlético are still very much in the Copa Sudamericana qualification picture and arrive on the back of a 3-0 Copa Sudamericana semi final win over Montevideo City Torque on 14 October. Coritiba sit 11th on 39 points, doing exactly what a mid table side does in late October: trying not to get dragged into anything ugly below them, a task their recent run of results has made harder than it should be.

Atlético's last five league outings read W W D W D, including a 2-1 win over Santos on 11 October and they have looked comfortable at home throughout. Coritiba's own run is D L L D L, which tells most of the story: a 1-1 draw with Botafogo on 12 October bookended by a 0-4 loss to Fluminense and a 0-5 defeat at Vasco in late September. Shipping goals in batches away from home is not a great advertisement for travelling to face a side who have lost just once in their last five.

Eduardo Domínguez took charge in February 2026 after replacing Jorge Sampaoli and has built a side that moves the ball with purpose and is willing to take the game to opponents. Fernando Seabra, in his first season replacing PC de Oliveira, has taken the opposite approach, setting Coritiba up to defend deep and look to hurt teams on the counter. Atlético are without Everson, out with a foot injury and Fred, sidelined with a hamstring problem, two absences that affect them at opposite ends of the pitch. Coritiba are without Tiago Cóser through a muscular injury and forward Lucas Ronier, still recovering from cruciate ligament surgery, losing their chief aerial threat at set pieces and their most direct pace in transition at the same time.

Atlético build from a 4-2-3-1 with Renan Lodi's overlapping runs from left back giving them a consistent option down the left to stretch the defensive shape and deliver early crosses, while Tomas Cuello and Bernard combine in the spaces behind Coritiba's midfield line. Cuello leads the team in goals and assists while Bernard picks pockets in tight spaces and supplies the passes that open compact defences. The deputy goalkeeper will need to manage a high defensive line with real confidence and the midfield pivot carries more of the organisational burden without Fred alongside it.

Coritiba's defensive 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 depends heavily on Josué's ability to screen and control the tempo in midfield while Pedro Rocha and Joaquin Lavega operate in the channels and try to get in behind early when the ball is won back. Seabra's side will need to be disciplined to the point of suffocation to deny Atlético space, whether Atlético's double pivot can dominate quickly enough to prevent Coritiba from setting up the counters they want is where this match is likely decided.

Atlético hold a clear historical edge, with approximately 17-18 wins from around 30 meetings compared to Coritiba's 10-11. The recent head to head cuts against that trend: Coritiba have won the last two, including a 2-0 in April 2026 and a 2-1 in October 2023, results tight enough to suggest they have found specific ways to make Atlético uncomfortable rather than simply getting lucky twice.

Dead ball situations are where Coritiba can cause Atlético real problems even on an off day and with Everson absent his replacement will face aerial deliveries into the box with less authority behind him and a defensive line that is not used to organising around a different voice. The Copa Sudamericana semi final a few days ago could prompt some rotation but Domínguez is likely to keep his strongest attacking options in from the start.

Atlético Mineiro should win this 2-0. Coritiba are in poor road form and have lost key personnel and that combination should leave enough space for Cuello and Bernard to find a way through well before the hour.
