How Botafogo and Chapecoense compare on rating, form and history.

Botafogo and Chapecoense meet on 17 October 2026 in a match that means very different things to each side. Botafogo are 13th with 36 points from 30 games and still have enough skin in the relegation fight to need a result here, whereas Chapecoense sit 20th on 18 points from 29 matches and are, by most reasonable assessments, already heading back to the second division. What that produces at Estadio Nilton Santos is a team fighting for survival against one playing out the string. Tite took charge of Botafogo on 16 September 2026 replacing interim coach Rodrigo Bellao, while Rafael Lacerda has led Chapecoense since 30 May 2026 after succeeding Fabio Matias and the two have never met as managers.

Botafogo's last five are exactly what their table position suggests: goals at both ends and no clean sheets, with two draws, one win and two defeats across that stretch. Four defeats in five means Chapecoense arrive needing a result they have shown almost no ability to produce.

Botafogo are without Marcal, suspended and Kaio, still working through a long term knee injury. The Marcal absence is the more disruptive of the two and whoever covers that channel will need to stay conservative about overlapping runs. Chapecoense lose Robert Santos to a cruciate injury and Fernando to suspension. Santos' absence thins an already limited forward line and without Fernando anchoring central midfield, Giovanni Augusto will need to carry more of the distribution work when Chapecoense try to transition.

Hakim Ziyech continues to settle into the number 10 role after joining Botafogo, while Danilo has contributed close to ten goals from midfield this season, unusually high for his position in this league. Arthur Cabral starts up front despite a recent scoring drought and Alex Telles is Botafogo's primary set piece deliverer from the left. For Chapecoense, Marcinho, with five goals, is their only realistic source of danger in the final third, with Giovanni Augusto the playmaker from deep.

Tite's Botafogo are built around patient build up play and central midfield control and since his arrival that structure has become more pronounced with quick switches to the flanks once the ball reaches the final third. Without Marcal on the left, Botafogo will either narrow slightly or push a midfielder out wide, which costs them the overlap threat but keeps the central density intact. Ziyech's ability to find pockets between the lines is frankly Botafogo's most dangerous weapon against a compact block and if he finds rhythm in those half spaces, Danilo's willingness to press high and cover ground quickly allows Botafogo to sustain pressure across long stretches. Cabral's runs in behind will at least occupy the centre backs even when the finishing is not quite there.

Chapecoense will defend in a low block but without Fernando to anchor the midfield screen, those defensive lines may be more exposed than they want when Botafogo recycle quickly. The plan depends heavily on keeping shape for long enough that Marcinho gets a moment on the break. Telles' left footed deliveries give the home side a dead ball threat all game and Chapecoense's centre backs will have to deal with those corners and free kicks across the full 90 minutes.

Botafogo have won eight of 13 meetings against Chapecoense, with four losses and one draw. The two most recent results split, with Botafogo winning 4-1 on 18 April 2026 before Chapecoense answered with a 2-0 win on 14 May 2026. That result is worth bearing in mind because it shows Chapecoense are capable of holding a defensive structure and converting when space opens up, even if the historical picture strongly favours the home side.

Botafogo to win 2-1. If they can sustain their build up shape despite Marcal's absence and keep Chapecoense pinned back, the gaps for Ziyech and Danilo should grow as the match progresses, even if Chapecoense hold their shape in the first half. Chapecoense will be well organised early and may steal a moment late through Marcinho on the counter but the Fernando suspension and the loss of Santos leave them short where it matters most. The Marcal absence is a real disruption to Botafogo's left side but the gap between these squads is wide enough that Chapecoense are unlikely to exploit it consistently.
