How Chapecoense and Athletico Paranaense compare on rating, form and history.

Serie A Round 30 brings Chapecoense and Athletico Paranaense together on 12 October 2026, a fixture that carries sharply different stakes for each side. Chapecoense sit 20th with 18 points from 28 matches and trail safety by six, while Athletico occupy fourth on 50 points from 29 games, firmly in the hunt for Copa Libertadores qualification.

Rafael Lacerda and Fábio Moreno have no prior meetings as managers, so whatever tactical chess gets played out at Arena Condá will happen without either man having a read on the other.

Chapecoense arrive having just taken a 0-4 battering from Vitória on 8 October, a result that exposed the kind of defensive brittleness that tends to compound itself when a club is already scrambling in the bottom three. Their last five reads L-D-L-W-L, the only return being a 1-1 draw against Atlético MG on 1 October. Athletico have been inconsistent enough to worry their own supporters, drawing 2-2 with Atlético MG on 8 October and carrying a D-W-D-L-D record into this one, the point at Galo keeping them inside the top four while also exposing the limitations of interim management.

Lacerda, who replaced Fábio Matias on 30 May 2026, is short in defence and midfield when it matters most. Fernando is suspended through yellow card accumulation and Heitor remains out with a hamstring injury, thinning a squad that was already stretched. Athletico have their own problems: Odair Hellmann serves a suspension handed down by the STJD, leaving Fábio Moreno to manage the side in an interim role, while Juan Felipe Aguirre is also absent through yellow card accumulation, costing the back line a regular starter at a difficult moment.

Chapecoense set up in a compact 4-2-3-1 designed to stay organised and threaten on the break. Losing Fernando and Heitor strips the central midfield of its two first-choice holders, meaning Lacerda's remaining anchors will need to work considerably harder to protect the back four. The attack still runs through Marcinho, their top scorer with around five goals and creative ten Giovanni Augusto, whose through balls between the lines are Chapecoense's clearest attacking outlet. If those two cannot combine on the counter, Chapecoense will spend most of the afternoon penned inside their own half.

Athletico operate in a 3-4-2-1 built around possession and midfield fluidity, though the absences of Hellmann and Aguirre pile extra responsibility onto the remaining centre backs and onto Luiz Gustavo in midfield, who has to hold the shape while the wing backs push forward. How Chapecoense's centre backs handle Kevin Viveros, 19 goals this season, will probably decide whether Athletico convert their territorial control into goals. There is also a thread worth watching in Augusto against Gustavo: if Gustavo gets dragged wide tracking the wing backs, Augusto could find pockets in exactly the spaces Athletico's system sometimes leaves exposed.

Athletico will control the ball and Chapecoense will sit deep waiting for Marcinho to run, which means that any lapse in concentration from the home defence risks being punished before they can recover, particularly with Fernando's cover gone from midfield. Chapecoense have struggled badly with clean sheets all season and that problem does not get easier against a side with Viveros in it. Athletico's own concern is overcommitting forward and leaving themselves exposed to set piece chaos or rapid breaks from a side six points from safety with eight games left. For what it is worth, they are unbeaten across the last seven meetings and have dominated the head to head comfortably, though Chapecoense's desperation at home adds a variable the record does not account for.

Dead balls are about the only area where Chapecoense can threaten without needing to sustain possession and deliveries into the box will look to exploit the uncertainty left by Aguirre's absence in Athletico's defensive shape. Chapecoense need points to stay alive while Athletico need the win to keep the Libertadores push on track, so neither side has much appetite for a cagey non-event.

Athletico's squad depth and Viveros's goal threat point to a win, predicted at 1-2 but the absentees on both sides make a narrow margin more likely than a comfortable one. A Chapecoense goal from open play or a set piece is entirely plausible.
