Corinthians vs Fluminense prediction: without Cano and Kennedy, Fluminense back themselves anyway
Corinthians host Fluminense at the Neo Química Arena on 20 September 2026 in Brasileirão Série A Matchweek 28, with the two sides arriving in very different emotional states. Fluminense are fifth with 45 points from 27 matches and firmly in the race for a top four finish that would secure Copa Libertadores qualification, whereas Corinthians sit 14th on 32 points. Making things considerably worse for the hosts, they were knocked out of the Copa Libertadores at the quarter final stage by Estudiantes on 16 September, while Fluminense spent the same midweek advancing to the semi finals past Platense. That emotional distance between the two squads walking into Sunday is hard to ignore.

Corinthians are in poor form, having lost 1-2 at home to Flamengo on 13 September before the 0-1 defeat to Estudiantes confirmed their continental exit, whereas Fluminense have been inconsistent but not alarming: a 1-3 defeat at Atlético-MG on 12 September came either side of a 1-0 win over Vasco and the Platense progression and they carry better momentum into this.
Diniz, appointed on 6 April 2026 to replace Dorival Júnior, keeps his job despite the recent turbulence but will be without Yuri Alberto through a thigh/hamstring problem. Marcão, who took over from Luis Zubeldía around 13-14 August, faces the bigger selection headache: Germán Cano (hamstring) and John Kennedy (knee/ACL) are both out, robbing Fluminense of their two most reliable goalscorers.
The tactical contrast between the two sides matters more than anything personal between the coaches, given there is no meaningful head to head record between Diniz and Marcão. Diniz builds Corinthians around possession and patient build up in a 4-2-3-1 and without Yuri Alberto the creative load falls almost entirely on Rodrigo Garro. Garro's ability to find space between the lines and switch play quickly will be tested by Fluminense's compact midfield, while Matheus Bidu remains the outlet from left back, with his overlap being the most consistent route Corinthians have for getting in behind. Hugo Souza anchors the defence but without a striker to hold the ball up, Corinthians' possession risks becoming circular: lots of it, none of it threatening.
Fluminense under Marcão are pragmatic, built around counter attacks and set pieces in a matching 4-2-3-1. Hulk is their main attacking outlet in the absence of Cano and Kennedy and the space behind Corinthians' high line is exactly where he causes damage. Paulo Henrique Ganso threads diagonal switches, picks his moment and feeds Hulk in behind, while Thiago Silva organises a back four that drops quickly and compresses space when possession is lost, with Fábio behind him in goal. The head to head that matters most on the day is Garro against Ganso in the number ten role: Garro tries to thread balls through tight spaces, Ganso slows the game down and waits for the diagonal that releases Hulk. Bidu's overlapping runs will put Fluminense's right side under repeated pressure but also leave Corinthians exposed on the break and Hulk is exactly the player to punish that with hold up play while his midfielders arrive late.

Set pieces are likely to be Fluminense's most reliable source of goals here and Corinthians will lean on Garro to make something of their own dead ball moments. The bigger concern for the hosts, though, is the emotional state of the squad after the Estudiantes elimination. Hesitant decision making in tight moments is hard to coach away in a matter of days and Fluminense come in with the confidence of a side that just reached a continental semi final.
We are backing Fluminense to win 2-1. Corinthians will have the ball for long stretches and could take the lead if Garro finds a gap between Fluminense's lines early but the absence of Yuri Alberto means they are unlikely to put the game to bed and Hulk only needs one opening. A possession heavy opponent with a high line and no recognised striker is close to an ideal opponent for Marcão's counter pressing setup. The motivation gap between a team chasing Libertadores qualification and one trying to rebuild after an elimination is real and on Sunday it should be enough for Marcão's side to win.
