Vitória vs Fluminense Prediction: Relegation Clash Tests Fluminense's Libertadores Push

Detailed tactical preview of Vitória hosting Fluminense in Série A Round 34, with both sides facing high stakes at opposite ends of the table.

ELO head-to-head

How Vitória and Fluminense compare on rating, form and history.

Vitória host Fluminense at the Barradão on 6 November 2026 with the two clubs arriving in entirely different circumstances. Vitória sit 14th with 38 points from 33 games and need every result they can get to stay clear of the drop zone, whereas Fluminense, fourth on 54 points, are trying to secure a Libertadores place. Cléber dos Santos is brand new to the Vitória job on a caretaker basis after replacing Jair Ventura, while Marcão has had the relative stability of a full tenure since August following Luis Zubeldía's departure, making the pressure on the two managers feel quite different despite the similar short term stakes.

Vitória have been patchy, hammering Chapecoense 4-0 on 8 October then collecting only two draws and two defeats in their next four before losing 0-2 at Coritiba on 31 October. Fluminense are no more convincing, having won just once in their last four after beating Internacional 2-1 on 28 October then losing to Chapecoense, Santos and Flamengo. Both sides are also dealing with significant absences: Cléber dos Santos is without Mateusinho through injury and Martinelli, who is out for the season after knee surgery, while Fluminense are missing Ignacio through injury and their own Martinelli after a season ending knee procedure of his own.

Vitória tend to set up in a 4-2-3-1 or 4-1-4-1, sitting compact and looking to hit on the break, relying on set pieces and direct balls to forward Renê. Midfielder Erick screens the defensive line and presses the first pass out of the Fluminense build up, while Cacá anchors the defence behind him. Losing Mateusinho and Martinelli hurts their width and rotation, so the full backs will need to stay disciplined while Erick takes on more of the ball winning load than usual. Fluminense play with more of the ball in a 4-2-3-1 that runs through patient build up and quick transitions, with Hulk dropping to receive to feet and turn to hold play up and Jefferson Savarino arriving late into the box from deep on the right.

The sides drew 2-2 at the Barradão as recently as May 2026, though Vitória took a 2-1 win in October 2024. If Erick disrupts the supply to Savarino, Fluminense are likely to recycle possession wide without penetrating the penalty area, which is exactly the low threat scenario Vitória's compact block is built for. Without Ignacio, however, the centre backs cannot step aggressively to meet Hulk's hold up play without leaving space in behind, so if Fluminense can get the ball to Hulk's feet early and in rhythm, that gap becomes the game.

We are going with a 1-2 Fluminense win. The visitors have cover at centre back and in central midfield where Vitória are missing two starters and their possession game looks capable of overwhelming a Vitória midfield that has been reorganised in days rather than weeks. Vitória's set piece threat is real enough to give them a route back into the match but with two key central players absent and the shape barely settled, a comeback from behind looks implausible. If Hulk wins the first contact and Savarino finds space between the lines before Vitória's mid block is set, Fluminense can be in front before the home side have a chance to settle.
