How Burnley and Derby County compare on rating, form and history.

Burnley welcome Derby County to Turf Moor on 19 September 2026 for a Matchweek 8 Championship clash that both clubs desperately need to win. Burnley sit 24th with three points from seven games, the only side in the division yet to win anything, whereas Derby are one place better in 22nd with four points and a single victory. This is a bottom of the table six pointer and a win shifts the mood entirely for whoever gets it. Nicky Hayen and John Eustace have never faced each other as managers, so this is also a first tactical read on both.

Burnley's last five reads L D L D L, a run that goes: 1-3 at Swansea City, 1-1 with Wrexham, 1-2 at Bristol City, 1-1 with Middlesbrough, then four shipped at Norwich. Derby's sequence is L L L W L, their only win coming at Portsmouth in early September with three losses either side of it.

Burnley are without Josh Cullen (ACL), Jordan Beyer (hamstring) and Maxime Estève (hamstring), the three players central to how Hayen wants to play, stripping the side of defensive shape and midfield control in one go. Derby have problems of their own, with Jacob Widell Zetterström sidelined until late October with a knee injury and Matt Clarke also unavailable, meaning Eustace is rebuilding both his goalkeeper and his central defensive partnership for this one.

Burnley typically line up in a 4-2-3-1 built around a high press and quick transitions into the channels, with a double pivot sitting behind. The injuries to Cullen, Beyer and Estève hurt most in those central corridors, where the balance between press and cover is hardest to maintain. Ugo Raghouber arrives late into the box from midfield while Bruun Larsen delivers from wide when fit and Kyle Walker will need to organise a defence already short of experience. Without Zetterström's authority in goal or Clarke's presence at centre back, Eustace's side lean on options that have not been tested at this level, with Sammie Szmodics the main attacking outlet and Bobby Clark looking to create from midfield.

Burnley have been dominant in this fixture, winning 10 of the last 15 meetings and Derby's last win against them came in January 2007. With Derby missing both their first choice goalkeeper and centre back, they are unusually exposed at set pieces, which is precisely where Burnley will look to apply pressure. Derby will look to counter through Szmodics and Clark but their recent habit of conceding late suggests they will struggle to protect any lead if Burnley stay on top into the final stages.

Seven games without a win has a way of breeding anxiety and that anxiety can be just as dangerous as the opposition. Home advantage, a head to head record going back nearly twenty years and Derby's two biggest absences at the back all favour Burnley here. The loss of Cullen, Beyer and Estève will be felt throughout but Walker's organisation and the goal threat Raghouber brings from deep should make the difference and a 2-1 scoreline feels right. Derby may grab a late one through Szmodics or Clark given Burnley's defensive frailties but conceding late is more Derby's pattern than holding on is.
