How Leyton Orient and Stevenage compare on rating, form and history.

Leyton Orient host Stevenage at Brisbane Road on 19 September 2026 in a League One Gameweek 7 fixture that matters rather more than the mid table positions suggest. Orient are 15th with seven points and Stevenage ninth with nine but the pressure falls disproportionately on the home side, who haven't won a league game at Brisbane Road since March, a seven match run without a home win that ended most recently in a 2-3 defeat to Wycombe Wanderers on 12 September. Stevenage arrive in better shape, having beaten Barnsley 5-1 away and Luton 2-1 on the road in their last two league wins.

Richie Wellens has been at Orient since March 2022 and Alex Revell took permanent charge of Stevenage in May 2024. Direct meetings between the two managers are limited and have produced no clear pattern, so what matters is how their systems match up on the day.

The 5-0 demolition of Bromley on 1 September showed what Orient are capable of but a 1-1 draw with Luton and then the 2-3 home defeat to Wycombe gave up three goals from behind their defensive line. Stevenage have been steadier, beating Barnsley and Luton either side of a goalless draw with Peterborough.

Orient are without Somto Boniface through a knee injury and both Joseph Olowu (Achilles) and Demetri Mitchell, who had a scan after the Wycombe game, are doubts, stripping Wellens of a large portion of his defensive and wide options in one go. Stevenage are missing Mathaeus Roberts through an Achilles problem but are otherwise close to full strength.

Wellens tends to line up in a 3-4-3 or 4-2-3-1, with wing backs pushed high to create width and space for his forwards. Jaze Kabia, who has four goals already this season and Yusuf Akhamrich (three goals) are the main threats up front with Isaac Hayden anchoring midfield. The problem is that losing Boniface removes a reliable defensive option and if Olowu and Mitchell are both absent, Wellens may set up more conservatively than he would like.

Revell's Stevenage prefer a compact, organised shape with quick transitions rather than sustained possession. Daniel Kemp offers goals and assists from midfield, Oliver Sanderson adds a further attacking outlet alongside him and Magennis is their aerial target from crosses and set pieces, though losing Roberts does cost them some midfield depth.

The matchup to watch is Hayden trying to disrupt Kemp's link up play, while Kabia and Akhamrich look to run channels behind the Stevenage centre backs. Orient's high defensive line is a weakness here because Kemp's ability to receive and drive at pace is exactly what punishes a high line and if Wellens sends the wing backs forward and leaves gaps centrally, Kemp and Sanderson can exploit the space. Set pieces may be Orient's clearest opening, given Stevenage could be adjusting their zonal marking without Roberts, though probably not enough to be decisive on its own. Orient lead the all time head to head record with 12 wins to Stevenage's seven and eight draws, the most recent meeting in March 2026 ending 1-2 to Orient, while Hayden's delivery into the box targets Kabia and Akhamrich and Stevenage use Magennis as an aerial target in their dead ball routines.

Orient have the attacking talent in Kabia and Akhamrich to cause problems for a compact defence but their home winless run and defensive absences make it hard to back them to hold a lead. The more likely story is Orient pressing forward and pinning Stevenage back, scoring, only for Stevenage to equalise through a transition or dead ball and leave Brisbane Road with a point.
