How Stevenage and Plymouth Argyle compare on rating, form and history.

Stevenage host Plymouth Argyle at The Lamex Stadium on 20 October 2026, a League One fixture sitting very differently in the two clubs' seasons. Plymouth are fourth with 19 points from 11 games and know a win here, with favourable results elsewhere, could take them to the summit. Stevenage are 12th on 12 points from nine matches, still trying to shake an inconsistency that has kept them in mid table since missing out on the play offs last season.

Both sides arrive with identical recent wounds. Stevenage lost 0-2 at Bradford City on 17 October, just after a 1-0 win over Wigan, leaving their last five games reading L-W-W-W-L. Plymouth suffered the same scoreline at Huddersfield Town on the same date, their own run reading L-W-D-W-L. Alex Revell, who took charge in May 2024 after replacing Steve Evans, has built Stevenage around defensive shape and rehearsed set pieces, while Tom Cleverley, appointed at Plymouth in June 2025 following Miron Muslic's departure, has brought more structure to the attacking third. Both managers are also short handed going in: Wanya Marçal is out for Stevenage after picking up a knock against Bradford and Plymouth are missing Julio Pleguezuelo and Malachi Boateng with a knee problem. Joe Edwards is back after recovering from his earlier issue, though it doesn't fully paper over the gaps. With Marçal absent, Stevenage will lean on Josh Magennis alongside Oliver Sanderson, while Plymouth look to Aribim Pepple, who has four goals already this season.

Stevenage typically set up in a 4-4-2, sitting in two compact banks and using wide areas to spring counter attacks, with the remaining central midfielders needing particular positional discipline now that Marçal is unavailable. Sanderson can run in behind and drag defenders out of shape and Magennis is named alongside him. Plymouth work in a 4-2-3-1 that gives the attacking midfielders freedom to rotate and create overloads and they've won three of their last six away matches building from the back rather than pressing frantically. Losing Pleguezuelo and Boateng means the double pivot has less cover if Plymouth are turned over in midfield, which may push Cleverley toward a more cautious approach than he'd otherwise choose. Pepple dropping into the half-space between Stevenage's midfield and defensive lines will be the reference point for their centre backs, especially if they push up to press.

Plymouth have the better of the head to head, winning seven of 11 previous meetings with two draws and two Stevenage wins, though the two most recent results (a 1-0 Plymouth win on 17 March 2026 and a 1-1 draw on 1 January 2026) were both close. Set pieces have been central to Stevenage's game plan for years under Revell and the absences of Pleguezuelo and Boateng may leave Plymouth lighter in aerial duels than they'd like, which is a problem heading into a game where Stevenage will be looking for exactly those situations.

This looks like a 0-0 draw. Stevenage's compact home setup limits space by design and Marçal's absence only makes it more likely that Revell sets up conservatively. Both teams conceded two without reply in their last game but Plymouth's injury problems reduce their ability to dominate centrally or sustain the pressing intensity that might unlock a disciplined block and while Edwards' return is welcome, it isn't a full fix. Plymouth should have more of the ball but Stevenage's set piece threat and compact shape should keep clear chances to a minimum. The narrow scorelines in both teams' recent results fit what the tactical picture already suggests. Plymouth hold their fourth place standing, Stevenage end a two game losing run.
