How Chelsea and AFC Bournemouth compare on rating, form and history.

Chelsea and Bournemouth meet at Stamford Bridge on Matchday 6 of the Premier League season, on 10 October 2026. Chelsea sit 10th with seven points from five games after a mixed start that has seen them concede a league high 12 goals, while Bournemouth are 17th with three points and still winless under Marco Rose. Chelsea need to arrest a slide that includes two defeats in their last three, while Bournemouth are still chasing their first win of the campaign.

Xabi Alonso took charge at Chelsea in May 2026, replacing Liam Rosenior and Marco Rose stepped in at Bournemouth over the summer after Andoni Iraola's departure. The two coaches have never faced each other, so whatever tactical conversation this match produces will be their first.

Chelsea's recent form has been uneven: wins over Fulham (3-2) and Brighton (4-3) to open the season gave way to defeats against Arsenal and Brentford, with a draw against Hull sandwiched in between. Bournemouth's run is bleaker, drawing with Everton, Brentford and Newcastle before losing 1-0 to Liverpool. The Cherries have been hard to beat but haven't shown they can actually win anything yet.

Chelsea are without João Pedro (knee), Moisés Caicedo (calf) and Reece James (thigh), with Cole Palmer a doubt due to a groin problem who will be assessed closer to kick off. Losing Caicedo and James in particular strips the side of its midfield anchor and right sided drive. Bournemouth are similarly depleted, with Alex Scott out for four to five weeks after an injury on England duty, Justin Kluivert sidelined with a muscular problem, Eli Kroupi missing with an ankle injury and Julián Araujo ruled out with a thigh complaint. Rose's options in midfield and out wide are thinned considerably.

Chelsea have generally lined up in a 3-4-2-1, though without Caicedo behind them and James on the right, the back line is more exposed than usual and the remaining defenders carry more of the burden of maintaining shape. Morgan Rogers has been the standout, scoring three times already and providing real drive through the middle third. Pedro Neto offers width from the flank and if Palmer is fit, he remains the player most likely to cause problems against a deep defence.

Bournemouth's 4-2-3-1 is built around a high press but the absences of Scott, Kluivert, Kroupi and Araujo cut deep into their rotational depth in midfield and on the wings, which may blunt a press that has been their most dangerous weapon this season. Marcus Tavernier has scored three times already and Evanilson leads the line looking to exploit transitions.

The real question is whether Rogers and Neto can pull Bournemouth's midfield wide enough to let runners arrive late into the box, or whether Rose's side sits deep and leaves Chelsea relying on efforts from outside the area, a realistic outcome with James absent and the right flank narrowed as a result. Bournemouth's route runs through Tavernier on the break, targeting a Chelsea defence that has already shipped goals from transitions several times this season.

Chelsea are unbeaten in nine consecutive Premier League meetings with Bournemouth, with four wins and five draws and the last three have all finished level: 2-2 in January 2025, 0-0 and another 2-2 in December 2025 - three consecutive draws, two of them scoring fests that neither side managed to win.

Chelsea's defensive vulnerabilities at set pieces have already been exposed this season, while Bournemouth's compact shape should help them defend crosses but leaves Tavernier and Evanilson as their likeliest sources of a goal if the game opens up late.

A 1-1 draw looks the most likely result, with the absence of Caicedo, James and quite possibly Palmer leaving Chelsea without their most direct route to goal and more exposed at the back. Bournemouth's shape has produced three draws already and should keep this one close. A 1-1 - Rogers giving Chelsea the lead, Tavernier cancelling it on the break - fits the pattern of this fixture and the state of both squads.
