Uzbekistan and Colombia open Group K at the 2026 FIFA World Cup on 18 June at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, with Uzbekistan making their first ever World Cup appearance after an AFC qualifying campaign in which their defensive record stood out. Colombia are back after missing out in 2022, arriving with a third place finish in CONMEBOL qualifying and a runners up spot at the 2024 Copa América behind them. The altitude at Azteca is worth factoring in: fatigue accumulates faster up there and set pieces grow more dangerous as legs tire late in the game. The two nations have no meaningful senior history between them, so there is nothing from past meetings to lean on.

Fabio Cannavaro took charge of Uzbekistan in October 2025 on a two year contract, working alongside his brother Paolo Cannavaro and Timur Kapadze. Nestor Lorenzo has led Colombia since 2022, steering them through Copa América with a setup built around counter attacks and set piece efficiency. The two coaches have never previously faced each other at senior level, so there is no tactical head to head history to read into.

Uzbekistan head into the tournament on mixed signals. Their defensive record in qualifiers was impressive enough to earn them this moment but warm up defeats to the Netherlands and Canada followed by a goalless draw with Venezuela and a win over Gabon gave a somewhat inconclusive picture of where they actually stand. Colombia have looked sharper in friendlies, beating Jordan and Costa Rica after earlier losses to France and Croatia, with an unbeaten run through late 2025 including victories over Australia, New Zealand and Mexico.

Neither side has significant injury or suspension concerns heading in. Uzbekistan's 26 man squad is built around goalkeeper Utkir Yusupov, defender Abdukodir Khusanov and captain Eldor Shomurodov, with Cannavaro expected to set up in a compact 3-4-3 or 4-2-3-1 that puts defensive structure first. Colombia have Luis Diaz, James Rodriguez, Davinson Sanchez and Yerry Mina available, with Lorenzo likely to use a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 that exploits Diaz's width and James's passing range while Sanchez and Mina hold the centre.

On the ball, Colombia are the side with more ways to hurt you: Diaz operating wide, James operating centrally behind the front line and Sanchez providing security at the back to allow the attacking fullbacks to push on. Shomurodov is Uzbekistan's main outlet in attack, with Fayzullaev looking to connect play in the middle and Khusanov and Yusupov anchoring the defensive unit. The duel between James and Uzbekistan's central pair of Shukurov and Hamrobekov is worth watching closely, as is the matchup between Khusanov and Diaz out wide, which will test Uzbekistan's back line for pace and decision making.

Altitude makes set pieces particularly relevant at this venue, especially late on when fatigue is at its worst. Colombia have the quality to score in open play and Uzbekistan will look to exploit any tiredness on the break or from dead balls. The conditions do not obviously favour one side over the other, they just compress the margins.

Colombia 2-1 Uzbekistan. Diaz and James give Colombia more ways to score than Uzbekistan have ways to stop them, though Uzbekistan are capable of punishing a lapse on the counter or from a set piece, which makes this closer than the scoreline suggests.
