Brest vs Nice Prediction: Lachuer's Organised Side Poised to Capitalise on Pantaloni's Travel Woes

In-depth tactical preview and 2-1 score prediction for Brest against Nice in Ligue 1 on 23 October 2026.

ELO head-to-head

How Brest and Nice compare on rating, form and history.

Brest welcome Nice to the Stade Francis Le Blé on 23 October 2026, seven games into a Ligue 1 season that has left the two sides almost inseparable in the table, Brest tenth with nine points and Nice thirteenth with eight. One point covers them and the gap to the bottom five is narrow enough that neither club can afford to drift. Brest want to build on nine points from seven games, Nice need them more urgently, given a road record that has been quietly damaging their season.

Julien Lachuer, who replaced Eric Roy at Brest in late June 2026 and Olivier Pantaloni, who took charge of Nice around the same time after Claude Puel's departure, have never faced each other as managers. This is two coaches still figuring out how much their squads will let them impose a system, meeting for the first time with no tactical history between them to draw on.

Brest's last five league results read D W D L L, their most recent being a 1-1 draw at Lille on 17 October. Nice come in with a L W W L D sequence and lost 1-2 at Lyon on 18 October, continuing a worrying pattern away from home. Brest have been inconsistent but at least avoided defeat at Lille, Nice haven't won on the road all season and that is the number that matters most going into this one.

Brest are missing captain Brendan Chardonnet (calf) and Raphael Le Guen (broken fibula), with Giovani Versini doubtful with a knee issue that strips defensive experience from a back line already conceding at home. Nice have it worse in almost every department: Moise Bombito (lower leg fracture), Antoine Mendy (cruciate), Laurent Abergel (cruciate) and Morgan Sanson (thigh) are all out, with Ali Abdi also doubtful. Losing both first choice central defenders and two midfielders before a road trip is a lot to absorb and Pantaloni is going to have to improvise heavily here.

Lachuer's Brest funnel possession toward the flanks and look for Ajorque early, using the big striker as a focal point rather than building through the middle. Kamory Doumbia, their top scorer with around four goals, arrives late into the box to find the space Ajorque creates. Brest are less authoritative defensively without Chardonnet and Le Guen, though that concern is secondary when Nice are the side arriving without aerial cover.

Nice are a more coherent outfit than their away record suggests, with Witsel anchoring the midfield and Clauss carrying a threat down the right flank and Elye Wahi's two goals this season make him the obvious danger up front. But losing Bombito and Mendy leaves a back line already prone to difficulties with aerial deliveries having to deal with Ajorque throughout the game. Witsel will have to work hard to hold Nice's shape when Doumbia drifts into dangerous spaces, which is exactly his tendency. The central question is whether Nice's quality in possession can deny Brest the territory to play long or whether Ajorque simply wins enough duels to make life miserable for a makeshift defence and the latter looks far more likely.

Recent meetings between these two have swung wildly: a 2-2 draw in February 2026, a 4-1 Brest win in September 2025 and a 6-0 Nice victory in May 2025, none of which reads across to a fixture shaped so heavily by absences and venue.

Brest are dangerous at set pieces with Ajorque contesting headers and Doumbia arriving into the second zone and with Nice missing two central defenders, the threat needs no elaboration. Nice can threaten from dead balls through Clauss's delivery and Witsel's positioning, though the loss of their aerial specialists from the available squad leaves that avenue looking narrow.

Brest 2-1 Nice. Ajorque should win enough aerial duels against a makeshift Nice backline and Doumbia has shown the timing to convert what follows. Wahi will likely get one back but Nice do not look like a side capable of keeping a clean sheet on the road right now.
