Ligue 1 preview of Troyes vs Lens on 17 October 2026, including team news, tactics, form and our 0-2 score prediction.

ELO head-to-head

How Troyes and Lens compare on rating, form and history.

Troyes host Lens at the Stade de l'Aube on 17 October 2026, a Ligue 1 Matchday 7 fixture that pits a newly promoted side sitting 17th with four points from six games against an outfit on its third head coach in six months and currently 10th with seven points.

Stéphane Dumont has been in charge of Troyes since 12 August 2024, the only constant in the recent coaching picture for his club, whereas Lens have churned through Pierre Sage, Dino Toppmöller and now Yannick Cahuzac since the summer, with Cahuzac appointed in mid September 2026 and no head to head record with Dumont to draw on.

Troyes arrive having lost four of their last five, most recently 0-2 at home to Marseille on 11 October 2026. Lens are harder to read: they beat Lyon 2-1 on 9 October before losing 0-2 to Sporting CP in the Champions League midweek, leaving their recent run at W W L D L. The European rotation has cost them freshness but they still have Thauvin, Sotoca and Édouard against a Troyes side that has yet to win at home in Ligue 1 this season, a run now stretching beyond 20 matches.

Troyes are badly hit across the squad, with Anis Ouzenadji (ankle), Yacouba Kone (knee) and Ismaël Boura (hip) all ruled out and Yvann Titi a doubt with a leg complaint, leaving Dumont short of options across defensive and attacking midfield in a 4-2-3-1 that was already looking thin. Lens are missing bodies too: Jonathan Gradit (injury), Maik Nawrocki (ACL, season over) and Abdallah Sima (thigh) are unavailable and Matthieu Udol is suspended, which forces Cahuzac to reshuffle his 3-4-2-1, though the squad he has left is still considerably stronger than what Troyes can put out.

Troyes' 4-2-3-1 is built around compactness rather than pressing and without Ouzenadji and Boura the wide channels will be easy pickings for Lens. Jérémy Le Douaron leads the line with Kandet Diawara and Renaud Ripart behind him but the midfield two screening the back four lack a natural ball winner. Florian Thauvin is the obvious danger man, having contributed three goals and four assists in six league appearances, he drifts inside from the right and tends to receive in the half space where Troyes are weakest. Florian Sotoca and Odsonne Édouard offer different forward profiles: Sotoca drops deep to link play between Troyes' defensive and midfield lines when Lens' wing backs drag opposition midfielders wide, while Édouard works in combinations closer to goal. If Diawara or Ripart are pulled out to track those wing backs, Sotoca has the room and the awareness to exploit the space they leave behind, if Troyes sit even deeper, Lens will recycle patiently and build overloads in midfield. The main caveat is fatigue: given the midweek trip to Lisbon, Lens may carry tired legs after the hour and their bench depth will matter if the game is still level at that point.

Lens have won five of the last six meetings between these sides and the promoted side's last home Ligue 1 win against them dates back several years. Édouard is a threat at the near post from crosses and Thauvin arriving late on second phase balls has caused problems before, Troyes have struggled to clear their lines under pressure all season and losing Boura removes one of their more reliable aerial options.

Another Troyes defeat would deepen questions about whether promotion was a mistake and whether Dumont can turn things around and there is not much here to suggest this game will be any different. Lens to win 0-2: with Thauvin in the half space and Sotoca free to drop if Troyes sit deep, Lens have multiple routes to goal against a defence missing two regulars.
