Bayern Munich vs RB Leipzig Prediction: Kompany's Side Eye Dominant Home Win

Detailed tactical preview and 4-1 score prediction for Bayern Munich against RB Leipzig in Bundesliga Matchday 6 on 17 October 2026.

ELO head-to-head

How Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig compare on rating, form and history.

Bayern Munich host RB Leipzig at the Allianz Arena on 17 October 2026, knowing a convincing win would tighten the gap at the top of the Bundesliga. Vincent Kompany's side sit third on 11 points after three wins and two draws from their opening five matches, still unbeaten in the league. Leipzig arrive fifth on nine points, having thrashed Eintracht Frankfurt 6-0 at home but taken nothing from their two away fixtures and there is an added subplot: new Leipzig coach Martín Demichelis returns to the stadium where he once played and coached.

Demichelis is only four months into the job after replacing Ole Werner in June 2026, so any meaningful head-to-head comparison with Kompany is thin at best. Kompany has been at Bayern since July 2024 and has built a possession dominant style that sits about as far from Demichelis's direct counter attacking approach as you can get in the Bundesliga.

Bayern's last two outings both ended in draws that flattered the opposition, a 2-2 Bundesliga result against Augsburg on 10 October followed by a 3-3 Champions League thriller against Viking three days later, though Kompany's side created enough chances to have won both games comfortably. Leipzig's form has been more erratic: dominant at the Red Bull Arena but pointless in both away fixtures.

Bayern must cope without Jamal Musiala, who is ruled out with a thigh injury, while Manuel Neuer remains a doubt with a foot problem and those absences push Ismael Saibari into the No. 10 role behind Harry Kane. Leipzig travel without three squad members: Christoph Baumgartner has a hamstring issue, Assan Ouédraogo misses out with a shoulder injury and Marc Guiu is sidelined by a muscle and hamstring complaint. Together they thin Leipzig's midfield rotation and forward options, which matters most in away games where they cannot dominate the ball and need players capable of pressing and rotating for the full 90 minutes.

Kompany's 4-2-3-1 funnels the ball wide to Olise and Diaz, with the full backs overlapping to give both attackers a second option. Olise has scored roughly four goals already this season and is most dangerous when he cuts inside, while Diaz stays wide and attacks the space behind the full back rather than cutting in. Without Musiala in the half spaces, Saibari will have to link midfield to attack more frequently and whether he can keep the ball moving quickly enough to drag Leipzig out of position is the question Kompany most needs answered here.

Leipzig's best route back into games runs through Christopher Nkunku, fresh from a hat-trick and sitting joint top of the scoring charts with Olise. Nkunku dropping deep to receive and turn could drag Bayern's centre backs out of position if the home side push high and Nusa can hurt Bayern if he receives the ball in space behind the full back. The problem is that losing Baumgartner and Ouédraogo cuts the quality of progressive passing that gets the ball to those forwards quickly, meaning Brajan Gruda and Romulo have to carry the ball quickly from defence to attack in their place.

The central question is whether Bayern can move the ball quickly enough to prevent Leipzig retreating into a deep defensive shape. Kompany's side average high chance creation at home and if Olise and Diaz can stretch Leipzig laterally before Kane gets slid in centrally, Leipzig's best chance of a response lies in winning the ball in the final third before Bayern's full backs recover but losing three players limits their ability to press and rotate without Baumgartner and Ouédraogo, who were the two players most likely to cover ground in both directions.

Wins of 5-1 and 6-0 in the Bundesliga do most to illustrate the gap between these sides in recent meetings. These fixtures tend to go over 2.5 goals and even when Leipzig score, they have consistently been overrun by Bayern's chance creation in these fixtures, which is not an encouraging pattern for a side arriving already three players short.

Bayern's set piece routines have grown more varied, with Kane often acting as the near post flick-on option while Olise and Diaz linger for cut backs. Leipzig may not have enough bodies to cover both the near post and the Kane flick-on zone simultaneously, especially if Neuer does not play. Demichelis will look to his wide attackers to win the first clearance and feed it back into the press but Leipzig have collected nothing on the road so far this season.

Bayern Munich 4-1 RB Leipzig. Leipzig losing three players who all contribute in different phases of the press gives Bayern more room to build than they found against Augsburg or Viking. Kane looks likely to open the scoring through channels that Olise's drifting runs create, after which Bayern should pull away. Nkunku may grab one on the counter but Bayern's home dominance weighed against Leipzig's away record points to a comfortable three-goal margin. For Demichelis, a heavy defeat at the Allianz Arena would be an uncomfortable way to be reminded how much has changed since he left.
