How Borussia Dortmund and Werder Bremen compare on rating, form and history.

Borussia Dortmund host Werder Bremen at Signal Iduna Park on 9 October 2026 in a matchday 5 Bundesliga fixture between the league leaders and a side still finding its feet under new management. Dortmund have won all four of their league games so far, keeping a clean sheet in each and are looking to make it five from five. Bremen sit eighth on seven points but those points came against sides currently in the bottom half of the table, which makes this a genuinely different kind of test. Dortmund want to pull further clear at the top while Bremen need a result that does more than flatter their record. Kovač and Thioune haven't met in competitive management before, which means there is no head to head pattern to weigh and the tactical matchup becomes more interesting for it.

Dortmund have won every Bundesliga game this season, most recently beating Stuttgart 1-0 away on 19 September 2026 without conceding. Bremen's record is more mixed: their most recent game was a 3-2 home win over Augsburg on the same date, though their overall form includes a defeat and a draw across the opening four fixtures.

Niko Kovač was appointed in February 2025 after replacing Nuri Sahin and has built a side that has kept four consecutive clean sheets while pressing opponents into turnovers in their own half. Daniel Thioune took over in February 2026 after succeeding Horst Steffen and has set Bremen up in a wing back system with a midfield double pivot.

Dortmund are missing Emre Can (ACL), Filippo Mané (thigh) and Giannis Konstantelias (knee), leaving Nico Schlotterbeck and Julian Ryerson as doubts. Losing Can removes experience and composure from central midfield, though Kovač's side have maintained their high pressing identity without him through four games.

Bremen are without Justin Njinmah, Keke Topp, Salim Musah, Skelly Alvero, Jens Stage and Senne Lynen through a mixture of thigh, calf, groin and ACL problems. Stage and Lynen are the most damaging losses: they are the engine of everything Thioune wants to do through midfield and without them Bremen's structure when out of possession is largely untested at this level.

Dortmund operate in a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 depending on the phase of play, with Nmecha's late runs from midfield the feature that has caused opponents the most trouble. With Can out, Felix Nmecha takes on more creative responsibility and his ability to arrive late into the box has already produced a Goal of the Month winner this season. Serhou Guirassy leads the line with Maximilian Beier alongside him, whose recent goalscoring form has already forced defences into covering both central and wide channels simultaneously. Dortmund have not lost in seven consecutive Bundesliga meetings with Bremen, which is the cleaner way to frame what their home dominance in this fixture actually looks like.

Bremen's wing back system asks the wide players to stretch play while the double pivot holds the shape behind but the injury list narrows that arrangement considerably. Niclas Füllkrug gives them a target to hold up play and bring others into the game and Marco Grüll's two goals against Augsburg showed he can cut inside from the left and finish, yet without Stage, Lynen and Alvero they lack the press resistance and runners needed to maintain their out of possession structure for 90 minutes. The individual battles that will probably decide this are Guirassy against Bremen's central defenders and Nmecha against the makeshift double pivot.

Bremen under Thioune do place emphasis on dead ball situations but their main delivery and aerial options are both unavailable, so that threat is largely academic here. Dortmund create enough through open play that they don't need to rely on set pieces and their midfield press has forced turnovers high enough up the pitch that Bremen will struggle to build any sustained attacking rhythm without Stage and Lynen.

Dortmund's perfect defensive record and the way their high press has functioned even without key personnel makes a strong case on its own. Guirassy and Beier have the quality to break down a Bremen defence already stretched by absences in midfield and further forward and Nmecha's habit of arriving late from twelve yards presents a structural problem the makeshift double pivot has no obvious mechanism to cover.

Bremen have improved under Thioune but six confirmed absences remove the players who carried the ball through midfield and pressed from the front with any reliability. The first goal is likely to arrive before half time through a transition that catches Bremen's makeshift midfield out of shape and a second should follow once Bremen push forward and leave space in behind. Dortmund 2-0.
