ELO head-to-head

How FC Cologne and Schalke 04 compare on rating, form and history.

Both sides are in the lower half after six games, Köln in 12th on seven points and Schalke in 15th on five, so this Bundesliga matchday 7 fixture at the RheinEnergieStadion on 24 October 2026 matters more than the early date might suggest. Köln are unbeaten at home this season and will be looking to pull clear, whereas Schalke, back in the top flight under Miron Muslić, have managed just four goals all season and need attacking answers quickly. Köln also carry the better head to head record, unbeaten across eight meetings between the clubs. René Wagner was confirmed as permanent manager in May 2026 after stepping in as interim from March, while Muslić has been at Schalke since 31 May 2025 following the Kees van Wonderen era and the two have never met at this level.

Köln lost 0-1 away to Eintracht Frankfurt on 16 October, ending a short unbeaten run though their home record remains intact. Schalke come in worse shape, winless in three and most recently beaten 0-1 at Mainz on 17 October, with a D W D L L run that raises genuine questions about whether they can score enough to stay up.

The injury lists on both sides are long enough to change the nature of this game. Köln are without Ragnar Ache, Thijs Dallinga, Timo Hübers, Elies Skhiri and Jan Thielmann, thinning their options across defence, midfield and attack simultaneously and Wagner will have to lean on whoever is available and hope Saïd El Mala and Linton Maina can cover for the absences. Schalke's situation is arguably worse in attacking terms: Edin Džeko is out with a head injury that required stitches, captain Kenan Karaman has a muscle problem and Hojlund, Lasme, Ljubicić, Schallenberg, Siebeking and Sylla are all unavailable too, leaving Muslić with very limited attacking variety going into a match where Schalke probably need to score.

Wagner's 4-2-3-1 tends to open up at home and with El Mala and Maina as the available creative options, Köln's best chance of unlocking Schalke's shape likely runs through those two combining in central areas, with Marius Bülter offering another forward option wide or from the bench. Muslić typically works from a 3-4-3 but without Džeko and Karaman, the hold up play and aerial presence that usually gives Schalke a way into away games is gone. Robin Gosens from wing back and Junior Adamu up front will be asked to do the heavy lifting, while Adil Aouchiche runs the midfield largely alone. The honest read is that Schalke will sit and try to counter but losing your two best attackers before a relegation away game is about as rough a hand as you can be dealt.

If Maina finds space in central areas, Köln can rotate quickly to El Mala and Bülter, whereas Gosens needs to win individual duels on the flanks to give Schalke a way into the Köln half. Köln's defensive organisation at set pieces will also be tested with Hübers and Skhiri missing and Schalke have lost Džeko and Karaman as their main aerial presence at corners. The 14:30 CEST kick off is early though neither side is in any position to ease into this one.

Köln 2-1 Schalke. The home side are unbeaten at the RheinEnergieStadion and face a visiting attack missing its two main options, so Köln should create enough through El Mala and Maina to go ahead and stay there. Schalke can get back into it, most plausibly through Gosens driving forward from wing back into the space a depleted Köln midfield leaves but Köln should have enough to settle it before the hour even if Schalke's goal keeps Wagner's bench nervous late on.
