SC Freiburg welcome FC Schalke 04 to the Europa Park Stadion on 11 October 2026 for Bundesliga Matchday 5. Freiburg sit third with 10 points from four games, their best ever start to a Bundesliga season, backed up by a +9 goal difference and a 5-0 home demolition of Borussia Mönchengladbach. Schalke, newly promoted under Miron Muslić, are 11th on five points after an early run that included a 0-0 at Bayern Munich and a 3-1 win over Union Berlin. Freiburg are chasing European football, Schalke are chasing survival.
This is the first time Julian Schuster and Miron Muslić have faced each other as managers, so there is no tactical history between them to draw on. Schuster took charge in July 2024 as Christian Streich's successor, while Muslić arrived on 31 May 2025 following a convoluted post Geraerts succession at Schalke that ran through Kees van Wonderen and an interim or two. Neither man has data on the other from the opposing dugout, which makes this about as close to a blank slate as a managerial head to head gets.

Freiburg's last four league games read W W D W, with the only dropped points coming against Eintracht Frankfurt in September, where they conceded late to be pegged back. They responded the following week by putting five past Gladbach, with the game effectively over at half time. Schalke have been more uneven: the 0-0 at Bayern showed their defensive organisation and the 3-1 over Union Berlin showed they can find the net but they have scored more than once in a game just once in four outings.
Freiburg are missing two midfielders, with Florent Muslija (knee/ACL) and Patrick Osterhage (muscular) both sidelined, though Schuster has enough cover to absorb those losses. Schalke's injury list is longer and more damaging: Dejan Ljubicic (knee), Henning Matriciani (cruciate) and Emil Højlund (Achilles) are all out, stripping midfield and attacking depth at the same time.
Freiburg are quick and possession oriented at home, with Yuito Suzuki leading the attack on four goals already this season and Igor Matanovic chipping in with three, while Matthias Ginter provides composure at the back and in build up play. Schuster will lean on Suzuki's movement behind Schalke's defence and Ginter's reading of the game to maintain structure when Schalke manage to break, particularly with Muslija and Osterhage unavailable to supply the ball between the lines.
Schalke will almost certainly sit deep, looking to break quickly with Gosens as the primary outlet on the left and Aouchiche supporting Karaman centrally but without Ljubicic, Matriciani and Højlund their options for rotating and pressing for sustained periods are severely limited. The plan is clear enough: stay compact, stay in the game and nick something. Against a Freiburg side that has scored nine goals at home already this season, that is a significant ask.
Matriciani's absence could leave gaps in behind and Suzuki has the timing and movement to exploit them, which is arguably the most consequential individual mismatch on the pitch. Ginter at set pieces is another problem for the visitors, with both he and Karaman dangerous in the air from dead balls and Freiburg have already converted from routines this season. Gosens, meanwhile, will need to track Freiburg's overlapping full backs rather than just wait for counters, which leaves Schalke with even less in the final third than Muslić had planned for.

Freiburg have won each of their last five Bundesliga meetings with Schalke, including a 4-0 in 2023, so there is no recent precedent on Schalke's side to draw confidence from.
Freiburg 2-0 Schalke 04. Schalke held Bayern to a 0-0 and can clearly organise themselves defensively but with Ljubicic and Matriciani both out they are asking a depleted midfield to hold their shape for the full 90 while still carrying a threat on the break. Suzuki should find the net, Matanovic probably too.
