How Mainz and Werder Bremen compare on rating, form and history.

Bundesliga Matchday 7 brings 1. FSV Mainz 05 against SV Werder Bremen on 24 October 2026, with Mainz sitting fifth on 10 points and Werder eighth on nine. A win puts Mainz level on points with fourth, a loss drops Werder into the bottom half of mid table.

Mainz's last five reads W-L-W-L-W: a 5-0 thrashing of Hamburger SV on 6 September, a 1-3 loss to Eintracht Frankfurt the following week, a 4-3 win over Borussia Mönchengladbach on 19 September, a 3-4 defeat at Bayer Leverkusen on 10 October and a 1-0 win at Schalke on 17 October. They have not won or lost back to back in five games. Werder are unbeaten across the same stretch (D-W-D-W-D), picking up wins at RB Leipzig (3-1) and Augsburg (3-2) while drawing at Dortmund and at home to Paderborn, both 2-2. They are unbeaten but have left four points on the table in those draws.

Urs Fischer arrived at Mainz on 7 December 2025, replacing Bo Henriksen and has built a structured, defensively compact side that looks to spring counters. Daniel Thioune took charge at Werder on 4 February 2026 after Horst Steffen's departure and the two managers have not faced each other in this fixture before.

Mainz are missing a few players who matter. Robin Zentner is a doubt with a hand and back problem, Dominik Kohr is ruled out with an ankle injury and Silas is gone with a leg and ankle fracture, removing two midfield and attacking options from Fischer's preferred setup. Werder's absentee list is equally awkward: Jens Stage (thigh), Senne Lynen (groin and hip) and Keke Topp (ACL) are all out, while Justin Njinmah is a doubt and may only manage a partial return, stripping Thioune of much of his central midfield depth and striking cover at once.

Fischer's Mainz defend in a low block, absorb pressure and look to hurt opponents on the break or from set pieces. With Kohr and Silas absent, Nadiem Amiri carries more of the creative load alongside Jae-sung Lee in midfield, while Phillip Tietz leads the line and Sheraldo Becker operates wide in support. Tietz scored the winner at Schalke from a dead ball and Fischer has invested heavily enough in Mainz's set piece routines that Werder will need to be disciplined at corners and free kicks.

Werder line up in a 4-2-3-1 or 3-4-3 depending on the game and without Stage and Lynen their central midfield depth is thinner than Thioune would like. Topp's long term absence combined with Njinmah's uncertainty limits their options up top. Niclas Füllkrug is the man they will rely on, with Marco Grüll offering pace from deeper positions and Ludovit Reis tasked with pressing high and disrupting Amiri rather than letting him settle.

The Amiri versus Reis duel shapes everything. If Amiri finds space to play through or around Werder's midfield, Mainz will be the better side, if Reis presses high and disrupts, Werder's transitions through Grüll and Füllkrug open up. Werder have drawn back level in three of their last five games, so going a goal down does not seem to unsettle them.

Mainz lead 11 wins to Werder's 12 across all meetings, with seven draws. The most recent fixture ended 2-0 to Mainz away from home, which fits exactly the kind of low block, counter punch game Fischer is building here.

Mainz 2-1 Werder Bremen. Tietz opens the scoring from a set piece or counter, Füllkrug equalises late and then Mainz's structure and home crowd force a second. With Kohr, Silas, Stage and Lynen all missing, neither side has the central midfield creativity to really cut the other open, so this will probably be decided by set pieces. Tietz's record from dead balls and Mainz's investment in that area gives them the edge.
