Tactical breakdown and 1-2 score prediction for SC Paderborn 07 vs VfB Stuttgart in the Bundesliga on 10 October 2026.

How Paderborn and Stuttgart compare on rating, form and history.

SC Paderborn host VfB Stuttgart on 10 October 2026 in an early season Bundesliga fixture that both clubs genuinely need to win. Paderborn sit 12th with four points from four games and a goal difference of minus two, still finding their footing after picking up their first win only recently. Stuttgart are 15th with three points and a goal difference of minus three, a position that sits well below where they finished last season and nowhere near where they see themselves. Both sides arrive carrying injury lists long enough to genuinely shape what happens on the pitch.

Ralf Kettemann took over Paderborn on 1 July 2025, replacing Lukas Kwasniok, whereas Sebastian Hoeneß has been at Stuttgart since April 2023, giving him a reasonable body of work to judge against. Their managerial head to head is essentially non-existent, so this one will be decided by squad depth and tactical setup rather than any personal history between the dugouts.

Paderborn's last four league results read W-L-L-D. The standout was a 3-1 win over Hoffenheim on 20 September, when their transitions were sharp and they caused real damage from set pieces, while a goalless draw with Mainz on 29 August saw them hold a stronger side out with minimal possession. Stuttgart's form has been more volatile at L-L-W-W-L, with the 0-1 defeat to Dortmund exposing defensive vulnerabilities that keep resurfacing.

Paderborn are already short handed, with Nyamekye Awortwie-Grant (knee), Marcel Hoffmeier (muscle), Sebastian Klaas (groin/thigh), Lasse Eickel (back) and Timur Gayret (ACL) all out alongside Laurin Ulrich, who is ineligible against his parent club Stuttgart. Kettemann is left shuffling across his defensive and midfield lines with whatever depth he has available.

Stuttgart's injury list is longer and arguably more damaging: Ameen Al-Dakhil (knee), Dan-Axel Zagadou (thigh), Tiago Tomas (muscle), Justin Diehl (thigh) and Nikolas Nartey (muscle) are all unavailable, leaving Hoeneß stretched in central defence and attack. Losing Zagadou and Al-Dakhil simultaneously is a real problem for a side already struggling at the back and neither is a player you can simply replace.

Paderborn usually set up in a 3-5-2 or 3-4-3, built around defensive organisation and quick transitions. With the squad as threadbare as it is, Kettemann will need Stefano Marino and Marvin Pieringer to stay high and run in behind on the break, while Santiago Castaneda presses aggressively and wins second balls in the middle of the park. Dead ball situations may well be their primary route to goal, since open play creativity is already limited by absences.

Stuttgart like to play on the ball and Hoeneß has used both back three and back four systems this season without quite settling on either. The loss of Zagadou, Al-Dakhil and Tomas hits the defensive line hardest, while Diehl's absence strips out a forward option and leaves Deniz Undav having to drop deep to receive and link play with no natural second striker behind him. El Khannouss will need to contribute goals or assists from midfield to cover what Diehl would normally have added from forward positions. Dennis Seimen makes his Bundesliga debut in goal at the ground where he spent time on loan, which makes the occasion a little loaded, though the more pressing concern for Stuttgart is simply whether he can handle the set piece deliveries Paderborn will aim at his area.

Undav's movement against Paderborn's central defenders is the central question of the match: if he can drag them out of position, Stuttgart's wide runners have space to exploit but if the hosts' compact block neutralises him, Stuttgart have very little else to turn to. Marino and Pieringer need to be sharp on the break because Stuttgart attack with numbers and leave space in behind when possession turns over. El Khannouss in behind Paderborn's midfield line could be the difference between Stuttgart building sustained pressure and running into a wall.

Stuttgart's possession game risks becoming predictable with so many players missing, which suits Paderborn perfectly. They can do what they did to Hoffenheim: sit behind the ball and spring forward the moment Stuttgart lose it. If Undav and Führich maintain their quality despite the disruption, they might open up space behind Paderborn's defensive line but that is a genuine 'if' right now.

Stuttgart have tended to come out on top in Bundesliga meetings between these sides, with a 2-1 DFB Pokal win away in January 2023 showing that advantage extends to cup football too. That historical edge matters a little less than usual given the extent of Stuttgart's absences but it is not irrelevant.

Set pieces matter more than usual for Paderborn given how depleted their attacking options are and Stuttgart's stretched defensive personnel will be vulnerable from dead balls if they are not properly organised. The more fundamental question is whether Stuttgart can function coherently despite their losses, or whether Paderborn's disciplined defensive shape creates just enough chaos to punish them.

Stuttgart to win 2-1. Undav's movement, his ability to hold the ball under pressure and his threat from range make him the most likely deciding factor and Stuttgart need points badly enough that you would expect maximum effort from a depleted but determined squad. Paderborn's set piece threat and compact shape will cause problems and probably earn them a goal but Stuttgart should have enough quality in the final third to find a winner.
