AC Milan vs Lecce Prediction: Amorim's High Press to Overcome Di Francesco's Compact Lecce

Rúben Amorim's AC Milan host Eusebio Di Francesco's Lecce in Serie A Matchday 5. Tactical preview, team news and our 2-1 score prediction.

ELO head-to-head

How AC Milan and Lecce compare on rating, form and history.

Milan welcome Lecce to San Siro on 20 September 2026 for Serie A Matchday 5, sitting sixth with eight points from four unbeaten league games. The difficulty is that they come into this off a 0-2 Europa League loss to Benfica midweek, a result that exposed real vulnerabilities in transition that Lecce, coming off a 3-2 win over Monza, will be keen to probe. For Amorim, this is a chance to show the Benfica defensive gaps were a one-off before the squad disperses for two weeks.

The two managers have not crossed paths often enough for their head to head record to mean much here, so context matters more than history. Milan's league form reads WWDD: wins over Torino and Venezia, then draws with Juventus and Lazio. The Benfica defeat sits outside that sequence but matters tactically because Amorim's system was exposed in transition and Lecce's counter attacking setup is designed to exploit exactly that kind of space. Lecce's form is harder to read, inconsistent enough that the 3-2 win over Monza looks like an outlier, even if it showed they can score against teams who give them space. They have also conceded in three of their four league games, with their back four looking uncertain whenever they are pushed high.

Milan have no injury concerns heading in, whereas Lecce are in considerably worse shape, with Willem Geubbels definitely out with an ankle injury, Medon Berisha a doubt with a thigh stress reaction and Omri Gandelman also uncertain, which means without their primary hold up option Stulic is the sole reference point and Lecce have no reliable way to keep the ball in Milan's half.

Amorim runs a 3-4-2-1 that prioritises high pressing and quick vertical transitions once the ball is won. Modric controls when Milan step up their press and when they sit off, acting as the trigger for Amorim's high block transitions, while Rabiot provides the physical cover behind him and Goncalo Ramos leads the line as the focal point of those vertical moves.

Di Francesco will set up in a compact 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1, with his attacking options already reduced to Stulic, Santiago Pierotti, N'Dri and Monteiro given Geubbels, Berisha and Gandelman's availability issues. Coulibaly and Ilic will need to win second balls quickly enough to release Pierotti before Milan's wingbacks recover and if Coulibaly cannot win the ball before Rabiot sets, Milan's press will overload Lecce's centre backs directly and Stulic will be defending rather than waiting for a break.

The deeper problem for Lecce is that Geubbels' absence removes their main outlet for holding up play, forcing a more frantic and direct style of counter than their system is built for. Without a reliable presence to relieve pressure, the visitors will struggle to get out cleanly even when they do win the ball, which means Milan will regain possession higher up the pitch and create overloads on either flank.

Milan have won the last five or more meetings between the sides, including a 1-0 in January 2026 and a 2-0 in August 2025 and Lecce have not beaten them in over twenty years. This is also the last fixture before the international break and going into two weeks off having lost to Benfica is not something Amorim will tolerate without a response. Lecce's set piece structure has looked uncertain this season amid the squad disruption, adding another area where Milan could press their advantage.

Milan 2-1 Lecce. Amorim's press should find Lecce's reserve midfield repeatedly out of shape and the wide overloads will be harder to manage without Geubbels to hold the ball and give the visitors a reset point. Lecce will probably nick one, since they have shown they can score against sides who give them space and their shape is disciplined enough that a clean sheet looks unlikely. With Lecce missing their primary hold up option and Milan's press designed to exploit exactly the disorganised transitions that causes, a home win is the most likely result, though it probably will not be clean.
