Serie A Matchday 7 brings Frosinone and Sassuolo together on 16 October 2026, with both sides sitting in the bottom half of mid table (Frosinone ninth on 10 points from six games, Sassuolo eleventh on eight and yet to win away from home). Frosinone arrive after a 0-3 beating at Napoli on 10 October, Sassuolo salvaged a 1-1 draw against AC Milan a day later thanks to an Odenthal equaliser. The tactical picture, with both squads thinned by injury, points to a game where neither side will be desperate to open up.
Massimiliano Alvini and Alberto Aquilani have no previous competitive head to head, so there is nothing from their managerial records to suggest an edge for either man. Alvini has been at Frosinone since July 2025, Aquilani only took over at Sassuolo in June 2026 following Fabio Grosso's departure.

Frosinone's last five league results read W-W-D-W-L, a record that holds up even with the Napoli thrashing counted against them. Sassuolo's W-D-W-L-D run tells a different story: they have not kept a clean sheet in any of their six league games this season and that is the number that matters most heading into this one.
Frosinone are without Florian Grillitsch, out long term after hernia and groin surgery and Daniel Birligea, who has a quad and hamstring problem, which thins the midfield and forward options more than the squad can comfortably absorb.
Sassuolo have the longer injury list. Ismael Kone, Jay Idzes, Daniel Boloca, Edoardo Pieragnolo and Fedde Leysen are all out, with Leysen's ACL the most serious of the lot. Losing Boloca and Kone guts their midfield and the absence of Idzes and Pieragnolo strips the back four of depth, leaving Aquilani leaning heavily on Domenico Berardi in attack with precious little around him.
Alvini runs a 4-2-3-1, or something close to it, focused on staying compact and looking to spring forward when possession is won. The double pivot has to work harder without Grillitsch to screen space, which limits how far the full backs can push. Antonio Raimondo leads the line with around four goals to his name and will look to hold up play for Giorgi Kvernadze on the wing and Romano Schmid in the ten role. Schmid tends to arrive late into the box rather than collecting deep, which is useful when Sassuolo's defensive line is stretched.
Aquilani prefers a 4-3-3 built on possession and progressive passing but this is not the Sassuolo squad best suited to that style right now. Nemanja Matic will have to anchor a depleted midfield largely on his own while Berardi, Sebastiano Esposito and Armand Lauriente carry the attacking burden. Frosinone will try to crowd Matic and deny him time on the ball, if they win it high, Raimondo's hold up game can release Kvernadze or Schmid before Sassuolo's defence gets back.
Sassuolo have won eight of the 15 meetings between these sides, with Frosinone winning two and the remainder drawn. Sassuolo won three of their last four visits to Frosinone, though the most recent encounter ended 1-1 in the Coppa Italia in September 2026 before Sassuolo advanced on penalties. Frosinone have been difficult to beat at home this season, which takes some of the sting out of that historical record.

Sassuolo's injury list has left them short in central defence, which makes Frosinone's set piece threat more relevant than it might otherwise be. Leysen's absence removes a physical presence who would normally challenge crosses and no obvious replacement offers the same aerial authority.
A 0-0 is the likeliest outcome, with Frosinone defending deep and looking to nick something on the break, knowing their visitors lack the midfield depth to sustain real pressure without Boloca and Kone offering progressive passing and carrying from deep. Sassuolo cannot keep clean sheets but cannot quite create enough either, particularly without that midfield pair. Raimondo and Berardi will each fashion a chance or two and Frosinone's best route to a goal is almost certainly from a dead ball, given Sassuolo are short at centre back.
