How Inter Milan and Parma compare on rating, form and history.

Inter welcome Parma to San Siro on 10 October 2026 for a Serie A Matchday 6 clash between the defending champions and a side still adjusting to fresh leadership. Inter sit second with 13 points from five games, level with Roma and Lazio, while Parma occupy 15th on just four points. The stakes are very different: Inter are chasing another Scudetto and need a convincing home result to maintain momentum, whereas Parma, already under pressure after a difficult start, must find a way to arrest a slide that has left them in the lower half.

Cristian Chivu took charge of Inter on 9 June 2025, replacing Simone Inzaghi and has built a clear identity around possession dominance since arriving. Alberto Gilardino was appointed Parma head coach on 29 September 2026 after replacing Carlos Cuesta, meaning there is no meaningful head to head record between the two managers and nothing from previous encounters to inform a tactical comparison.

Inter arrive unbeaten in their last five Serie A outings (W-D-W-W-W), including a hard fought 2-2 draw away at Roma on 19 September 2026. Parma's form reads W-D-L-L-L across the same period, a run that prompted the managerial change and Gilardino has had almost no time to instil his methods before this fixture.

Inter must cope without John Stones (thigh and hamstring) and Curtis Jones (thigh), absences that leave Barella and Bastoni carrying the structure with less protection than usual. Parma are without Pontus Almqvist (calf) and Hans Nicolussi Caviglia (groin): Almqvist was the main carrier in transition and Nicolussi Caviglia the connector between lines and their absence means Gilardino has almost no creativity to call on from the bench either.

Chivu has favoured a 3-5-2 or 3-1-4-2 shape that lets Inter control possession while Lautaro Martinez, with four goals in five games, does the damage at the top. Barella keeps the midfield structure intact and Bastoni steps out from the back three to progress play, both now carrying extra responsibility with Stones and Jones unavailable.

Gilardino is expected to set Parma up in a compact 3-4-2-1 or similar defensive block, looking to stay organised out of possession and spring counters when the chance arises. David Romero leads the line, Mariano Troilo anchors the central defence and Mandela Keita presses from midfield and disrupts passing lanes. Without Almqvist and Nicolussi Caviglia, Parma have no reliable runners in behind and no one to carry from deep, so once Inter settle into possession it is hard to see how the visitors get out of their own half.

Inter's wing backs push high to create overloads against a compact shape and the Barella Keita duel in the middle of the park will largely determine whether Inter dominate possession or whether Parma can occasionally break. Martinez's movement between the lines will test Troilo's positioning throughout and given how little time Parma have had under their new coach, their defensive cohesion may still be fragile enough that Inter exploit the spaces Martinez and Barella have been opening all season.

Inter have gone unbeaten in at least 11 consecutive meetings with Parma, whose last win in this fixture dates back to 2018, which tells you most of what you need to know about how this rivalry tends to go.

Inter's set piece routines have generated clear chances under Chivu through structured deliveries and well rehearsed movements and Parma's compact shape can be vulnerable to organised attacks when defenders are forced into uncomfortable positions. The international break may have given both teams extra preparation time on dead balls but Inter's greater overall cohesion gives them the clearer advantage here and they have not lost at home in the league this season.

Inter Milan 4-0 Parma. The double absence of Almqvist and Nicolussi Caviglia is the central fact: without Almqvist running behind the line or Nicolussi Caviglia carrying from deep, Parma have no reliable way to exit their own half quickly, which means Inter's high possession style simply grinds them down. Martinez's movement behind Troilo and the Barella Keita mismatch in midfield should open the game up early and Inter's set piece exposure of an undermanned back line accounts for at least one of the four. Gilardino's limited preparation time suggests Parma's shape may deteriorate badly as the game stretches, with very little on the bench to change the picture.
