Feyenoord host AZ in a pivotal Eredivisie matchup where both sides chase early-season supremacy amid a raft of absences.

How Feyenoord and AZ compare on rating, form and history.

Feyenoord welcome AZ to De Kuip on 10 October 2026 for a Matchweek 8 Eredivisie fixture that is, on paper at least, the biggest game of the Dutch season so far. AZ arrive as league leaders with 19 points from seven matches while Feyenoord sit two behind in second, meaning the visitors can extend their cushion at the top or hand the hosts the outright lead depending on the next 90 minutes. Giovanni van Bronckhorst, in charge of Feyenoord since June, faces Lee-Roy Echteld's AZ side with both squads carrying enough injury absences to make predicting the shape of this one genuinely difficult.

Feyenoord go into this on the back of five unbeaten league games (W-D-W-W-W), capped by a 5-0 dismantling of Utrecht before the international break. AZ have been even more consistent, going W-W-W-D-W across their last five to extend an unbeaten run across all competitions to 13 games.

Feyenoord's injury list is long and leans heavily on the defensive end of the squad. Bart Nieuwkoop (knee), Gijs Smal (ankle), Thomas Beelen (broken leg), Tsuyoshi Watanabe (leg) and Jordan Bos (knee) are all confirmed absences, with Jakub Moder also out through a knee issue and Gonçalo Borges a doubt with a knock. That is a lot of depth gone from the back line and midfield at once and van Bronckhorst will need to reshuffle considerably to maintain the high pressing 4-3-3 shape that has served Feyenoord well this season.

AZ are dealing with less disruption but it is still notable. Stije Resink is out until at least November or December with a knee injury, removing the player who breaks up play and recycles possession in the first phase, which puts more on Peer Koopmeiners and Dave Kwakman to control the middle, while Denso Kasius also carries a doubt with a groin knock.

Anis Hadj Moussa has already scored five goals in three league games cutting in from the flank and Gjivai Zechiel (five goals, four assists) makes Feyenoord a two pronged problem even before you factor in midfield. Sustaining that pressing intensity for 90 minutes becomes considerably harder without several full backs and centre backs and the question of whether van Bronckhorst's reshuffled defence can hold its shape will likely decide whether this is a tight win or something messier.

AZ work in a compact 4-2-3-1, prioritising possession before releasing quickly through Mexx Meerdink, who leads their attack as the primary striker. Ro-Zangelo Daal operates between the lines to connect midfield to attack and Koopmeiners and Kwakman will need to screen effectively in Resink's absence. AZ have not kept a clean sheet against Feyenoord since September 2019 and given how much Hadj Moussa and Zechiel have been producing, that run looks unlikely to end here.

The matchup most worth watching is Meerdink against a reshuffled Feyenoord centre back pairing. Without a settled partnership at the back, Feyenoord will struggle to handle a striker of his physicality and he should get chances. Hadj Moussa against AZ's left sided defenders is the other threat worth tracking and if AZ push their full back high and leave space in behind, Feyenoord have the pace to make them pay.

Feyenoord have dominated this fixture recently, winning seven of the last ten meetings to AZ's one, with the most recent clash ending 1-1 in May 2026. AZ have not kept a clean sheet in this fixture in over six years, which matters considerably when you consider how heavily Feyenoord rely on their front three. They also lean on set piece delivery and wide overloads, which could become even more decisive with AZ's midfield shape disrupted by Resink's absence and Feyenoord have not lost a competitive home game in 11 attempts.

A 2-2 draw looks the most likely outcome. Hadj Moussa and Zechiel give Feyenoord enough firepower at De Kuip to find the net twice but the defensive gaps are real enough that AZ, through Meerdink and Daal, will get at least one chance in behind that Feyenoord's reshuffled defence cannot cover. AZ's 13 game unbeaten run across all competitions tells you they have the mentality to stay in this when the game opens up, though their own injury concerns mean they probably cannot shut it out either.
