NEC vs Go Ahead Eagles Prediction: Mid-Table Clash Set for Tense Stalemate

The Eredivisie returns on 20 September 2026 with NEC Nijmegen hosting Go Ahead Eagles in round seven, a fixture that probably won't move the needle at the top of the table but matters plenty for both sides. Sitting 10th and 9th after six games, neither team is threatening the European spots or looking nervously at the bottom, with NEC on 7 points and Go Ahead Eagles on 9.

Dick Schreuder took charge of NEC in July 2025, replacing Rogier Meijer and switching to a 3-4-2-1 that has become the team's base shape. Joseph Oosting arrived at Go Ahead Eagles this past July after Melvin Boel, keeping a compact 4-2-3-1 that prioritises defensive shape first. The two managers have no meaningful record against each other, so there's no statistical edge to call.

NEC's last five has been bumpy: L-D-L-W-W. NEC tend to set up in a 3-4-2-1 with wing backs overlapping to create 2v1s in wide areas. Tjaronn Chery is the creative engine here with around three goals already this season, while Dušan Tadic, when fit, has the ability to hold the ball and switch play and Bryan Linssen leads the line. The problem is the defence, which has looked porous in recent high scoring games and will badly miss Kaplan and Fonville.

Go Ahead Eagles play a 4-2-3-1, with Søren Tengstedt leading the attack with five goals and Victor Edvardsen and Mathis Suray looking to receive between the lines and feed him in behind, though converting chances away from home has been a recurring issue. Without Nauber and Saathof, Oosting may drop his defensive line to limit the space Linssen can exploit.

Chery against Suray's midfield influence will shape where NEC's best chances come from, while Tengstedt's finishing will test whoever Schreuder throws in to cover for Kaplan and Fonville. Tadic dropping deep could disrupt Oosting's double pivot and Linssen's hold up play will determine whether NEC can pin the visitors back or get caught on the break through Edvardsen.

Dead ball situations could easily decide this given how thin both defences are. NEC's delivery from wide areas is worth noting, though it can leave them exposed on the turn and that's where Tengstedt's pace in behind becomes most dangerous.

The 1-1 feels right here. NEC have enough at home to take the lead, with Chery's movement between the lines and Linssen's runs in behind likely to trouble a reconfigured back four but the absence of Kaplan, Fonville and Mor means they'll be vulnerable to Tengstedt and Edvardsen in the spaces behind. Go Ahead Eagles, meanwhile, have collected points consistently even through difficult stretches, their last five producing four points despite a loss along the way. With both defences patched up, one goal apiece looks like where this lands.
