PEC Zwolle host SC Cambuur on 11 October 2026 in a Matchweek 8 Eredivisie fixture where both clubs are close enough to the bottom three that dropping points would hurt. After seven games Zwolle sit 16th with just four points while Cambuur occupy 14th with five and both sides have been conceding at a rate that makes this fairly simple to frame: whoever defends better on the night probably wins.
No managerial head to head exists between Henry van der Vegt and Johan Plat, both of whom stepped into their roles fairly recently. Van der Vegt replaced Jim Brinkhof on 1 July 2025 while Plat came in ahead of the 2026/27 season after replacing Henk de Jong, making Sunday effectively their first look at each other tactically.

Zwolle arrive on the back of a mixed run (L-L-D-L-W) that flatters them somewhat. The 0-7 thrashing at Feyenoord on 13 September and the 0-3 defeat at FC Groningen five days later tell you most of what you need to know about their defensive problems, with a 2-2 draw with Sparta Rotterdam on 4 September and a 1-3 loss at NEC Nijmegen sandwiching their only win in the run, a 2-0 home victory over Heerenveen on 22 August. Cambuur's D-W-D-L-L sequence shows similarly patchy form: a 1-1 draw at ADO Den Haag on 19 September and a convincing 3-0 home win over NEC Nijmegen on 12 September were either side of a 1-4 loss at FC Twente and a 2-5 defeat at Feyenoord.
Van der Vegt must plan without Younes Namli (hamstring) and Filip Krastev (Achilles), with Ibrahim Cissoko and Ryan Thomas still doubts whose availability will not be confirmed until closer to kick off. Losing Namli and Krastev thins Zwolle's central options and leaves van der Vegt short of his preferred ball carriers. Plat faces similar problems with Wout Asselman out through injury, Daan Visser sidelined long term with an ACL tear and Nicolas Binder doubtful. Losing Visser is the real blow given he was Cambuur's most reliable defensive presence and his absence forces a reshuffle of the back line heading into a game Cambuur need to win.
Zwolle generally set up in a 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 built around quick transitions, though 'quick transitions' has meant something different when you have shipped 20 goals in seven league games. Nick Viergever has been brought in to organise a back four that has been beaten repeatedly in behind and his evening will largely be spent trying to contain El Arguioui and Hamache. Koen Kostons remains the main attacking outlet, now joined by Elias Sorensen as an additional forward alongside him. Cambuur favour a similar 4-2-3-1 shape with a higher press and Rafik El Arguioui and Ilyes Hamache, who have combined for seven of Cambuur's ten goals, thrive on service from midfield while targeting the space behind Zwolle's full backs. Plat will need his double pivot to get across to Kostons and Sorensen when Zwolle turn possession over.
The absences make both sides more predictable than they would otherwise be. Without Namli and Krastev, Zwolle lose their best ball carriers in central areas and will lean heavily on Kostons as a target, without Visser and possibly Binder, Cambuur may be more circumspect away from home than their recent attacking numbers suggest and that mutual caution could give way quickly once either side concedes first. If Viergever cannot contain the movement of El Arguioui and Hamache, Zwolle have little margin for error elsewhere but with Sorensen and Kostons available to run at a high line on the break, Zwolle are capable of winning this.

Zwolle lead the historical series with 16 wins from 27 meetings, though the most recent encounters came during the 2021/22 campaign, so the record offers limited insight into current squads. The pattern of high scoring games in those meetings does fit the over 2.5 goals trend both sides have shown this season and with neither side having kept a clean sheet yet, there is little reason to expect one here. Cambuur's set piece record is a notable strength this season and becomes even more important given how much their injury list has constrained their build up options, while a Zwolle defence that has already shown it can be disorganised from dead ball situations will need to be considerably sharper.
We are backing a 2-1 win for PEC Zwolle. Kostons and Sorensen give Zwolle a real threat when they break quickly and while the midfield absences are a genuine problem, playing direct actually suits the personnel van der Vegt has available. El Arguioui and Hamache have combined for seven of Cambuur's ten goals this season and Zwolle's back four will need a much better day than they have managed recently to keep both quiet but Cambuur's away record and the disruption caused by Visser's absence in defence should allow Zwolle to take it narrowly, with both sides scoring.
