ELO head-to-head

How Twente and PSV compare on rating, form and history.

FC Twente host PSV Eindhoven at De Grolsch Veste on 20 September 2026 in Eredivisie Round 7. Twente sit fifth after six matches with 13 points from a 4-1-1 record and a goal difference of plus seven, while PSV lead the table on 16 points from five wins and one draw having scored 22 goals while conceding only seven. Twente have kept clean sheets in each of their three home games this season, conceding just five goals across all six league matches and PSV arrive as the only unbeaten side in the division.

John van den Brom took charge of Twente on 15 September 2025, replacing Joseph Oosting, while Peter Bosz has led PSV since July 2023. There is not much direct head to head data between the two managers but the pattern under Bosz is consistent: his PSV sides dominate this fixture and there is little in the recent record to suggest that changes here.

Twente's last five results read W W D W W, including a 2-0 home win over ADO Den Haag on 12 September 2026 and a 1-0 victory at Telstar three days earlier. PSV have been even more emphatic, winning all five of their last matches and most recently thumping Sparta Rotterdam 4-1 away on 13 September 2026 to continue a run that has produced 22 league goals in six games.

Twente will be without Kristian Hlynsson and Stav Lemkin through injury, losing their first choice options in central midfield and at centre back and placing more responsibility on Ramiz Zerrouki and Robin Pröpper respectively. Wout Weghorst leads the attack having already scored three times since arriving in 2026, with Lars Unnerstall in goal.

PSV face a lengthier injury list, with Jerdy Schouten out with a knee cruciate ligament injury, Kiliann Sildillia sidelined following surgery, Alassane Plea and Sam Lammers both unavailable and Sami Ouaissa out with a hamstring problem, covering both central defence and attacking width. Ricardo Pepi still leads the line supported by Sven Mijnans and Guus Til in midfield, with Sergino Dest pushing regularly into the final third from right back and Matej Kovar in goal.

Twente typically line up in a 4-3-3 that prioritises compactness, winning back possession in their own half before springing forward through Weghorst. Losing Hlynsson removes the natural link between midfield and attack, meaning Zerrouki will need to cover more ground and could leave gaps for PSV to exploit. Dead balls are Twente's clearest route to goal, with Pröpper and Weghorst both dangerous in aerial duels.

PSV tend to alternate between 4-3-3 and 4-2-3-1 depending on the phase of play, pressing high throughout. Losing Schouten and Sildillia weakens the central defensive screen but Mijnans and Til have combined for multiple goals already this season and will be Twente's primary concern in midfield. Dest's overlapping runs from right back could pin Twente's right winger into a defensive position, removing one of their counter attacking options on that side, while Pepi will look to run in behind if Twente's full backs push up to press. Twente should press aggressively early to prevent PSV from building through midfield and forcing play wide and if they can win the ball high up the pitch then Weghorst's aerial presence makes him a constant problem inside the area, though PSV's attacking full backs can create two on one situations down both flanks regardless of who is absent.

PSV have won the last eight meetings between the sides and historical encounters have averaged around four goals per game. Twente have conceded just five goals in six league games this season, which gives them a more credible defensive base than in those recent PSV fixtures.

Pröpper's aerial presence and Weghorst's positioning in the box are Twente's primary set piece weapons and PSV have conceded from dead balls in previous away fixtures. PSV can be dangerous at set pieces too, with Dest and Til able to deliver from wide positions and the absences on both sides will shape how each team manages these situations: Twente are likely to pack the box while PSV look for quick short corner routines to bypass a crowded defence.

We are backing PSV to win 2-1. Twente's home form and defensive organisation should limit the visitors to fewer clear chances than they have enjoyed in recent weeks and Pröpper and Weghorst both present genuine aerial threats at corners that make a Twente goal likely, particularly if PSV's defensive line pushes too high on the break. But Pepi has been directly involved in multiple goals this season and Til has chipped in consistently alongside him, which is enough to back PSV over a Twente side still adjusting to the absence of their first choice options at centre back and in central midfield.
