How Nacional and Sporting Braga compare on rating, form and history.

CD Nacional host SC Braga at Estádio da Madeira on 25 October 2026 in a Primeira Liga Matchday 9 fixture, with Nacional needing their first win of the season and Braga needing to prove their new appointment isn't a panic measure. Nacional sit 16th with just four points from eight games and a goal difference of minus nine. Braga occupy eighth with 11 points and a goal difference of minus one, having taken three losses and one win from their last five across all competitions. Both clubs enter under new management following poor results, so this is less a tactical chess match than a scramble to stop the bleeding.

João Henriques brings a poor record against Braga into this, winning just once in nine previous meetings against seven defeats and a draw, whereas Franclim Carvalho has no prior senior head to head record against Nacional. Henriques was appointed on 21 October to replace Alexandre Santos, while Carvalho took charge on 20 October after succeeding Carlos Vicens, meaning both men will be working from first impressions rather than settled systems, a fact that makes the respective squad situations all the more decisive.

Nacional arrive on the back of five straight league defeats, including a 2-3 home loss to Rio Ave on 11 October and a 0-4 thrashing at Famalicão on 19 September, before a Taça de Portugal exit to Sanjoanense on 18 October completed a miserable run. Braga's recent sequence also reads three losses and one win from their last five, though they beat Gent 2-0 in the Conference League on 22 October before losing at home to Gil Vicente 1-2 three days earlier.

Nacional are without four players heading into this: Léo Santos is out with a torn lateral ligament, Ulisses remains sidelined by a broken ankle, Filipe Soares is unavailable with a muscle injury and Matheus Dias is suspended for accumulated cards. Losing Santos and Ulisses hurts most in aerial situations, while Dias's absence strips Nacional of a midfield anchor, leaving Henriques with no obvious replacement from within the squad. Braga are missing only Sikou Niakate, who has been out since April with an Achilles injury.

Henriques is likely to respond to Nacional's defensive frailties with a compact 4-2-3-1 that prioritises set pieces. Matchoi Djalo will be asked to find space in midfield while Abdel Kader Njoya, who scored on his debut, leads the line and drops deep to link play. The difficulty is that those moves now have to compensate for three defensive absentees, meaning Henriques has no natural cover for the channels Horta is expected to drift into.

Carvalho has outlined a system built around getting the ball to Horta and Pau Victor quickly rather than recycling possession, with Braga expected to line up in a 4-2-3-1 that runs the attack through Horta drifting between the lines, looking to receive and turn on Nacional's double pivot. Niakate's absence means Braga's centre backs carry more of the first pass responsibility, which may slow their transitions, though that is the one area Nacional are looking to exploit. Nacional nonetheless field three defensive absentees and a suspended midfielder against a Braga squad that is almost fully fit and Pau Victor's runs in behind a depleted home defence are likely to be Nacional's most persistent problem given the space that opens up without Dias and Santos in position.

Braga lead the all time head to head comfortably and won the reverse fixture 2-1 in February 2026, which matters here because set pieces remain Nacional's clearest route to goal, with Henriques reportedly drilling them in his first sessions this week, yet the absences of Santos and Ulisses shrink their aerial presence at both ends. Braga's dead ball organisation has reportedly improved under the new staff, which could turn Nacional's enforced changes into a liability rather than a neutral reshuffle and Braga arrive having kept a clean sheet in midweek, which at least tells Carvalho his back line can organise under pressure, whereas Nacional head into this with a cup exit still fresh and Henriques needing a response quickly.

There is something genuinely odd about a match where both managers are debuting but the squad arithmetic is hard to argue with: when one side has four absentees including two aerial defenders and a midfield anchor and the other has one long term injury, the gap is plain. Nacional's five match losing streak, four absentees and a brand new manager make for a rough combination and Braga's pairing of Horta between the lines and Pau Victor in behind Nacional's makeshift defence is a specific mismatch Henriques has almost no answer for with his available personnel. Carvalho being new tempers expectations slightly but Braga's squad depth and their recent European result leave them the more settled side despite their own upheaval at the top. Njoya's ability to run in behind could test Braga's high line on the break but with Santos and Ulisses gone, Nacional have no aerial cover for corners and crosses and that is where Braga are likeliest to find their second goal. 0-2 to Braga.
