How Rio Ave and Nacional compare on rating, form and history.

Both clubs arrive at the Estádio dos Arcos on 11 October 2026 locked on four points after seven Primeira Liga games, 16th and 15th respectively. A defeat here doesn't just hurt, it starts to feel genuinely serious. Rio Ave made their move last week, replacing Sotiris Silaidopoulos with Vasco Seabra on 4 October and the new manager bounce is real even if it isn't guaranteed. Nacional, still settling under Alexandre Santos who arrived in early September, travel with five straight defeats and a midfield short of cover.

Rio Ave's last five league games produced one win, one draw and three losses, bad but not catastrophic compared to what Nacional have been doing. Nacional have lost all five of their most recent league matches, including a 4-0 defeat to Famalicão on 19 September, a run that already cost one manager his job and hasn't shown any sign of turning. What makes it damning is the company: Estoril, Gil Vicente and Chaves are on that list, teams Nacional should be competing with at this level. Rio Ave at least have winning football in them, having beaten Estoril 2-0 on 22 August and pushed Estrela Amadora to a 3-3 draw. The 4-0 losses to Santa Clara and Sporting CP are alarming but explainable. Nacional's losses aren't: the defence has conceded in every game, the midfield can't control possession and there's no evidence yet that Santos has found a setup that works.

Rio Ave are without goalkeeper Cezary Miszta, out with a long term lumbar vertebra problem and midfielder Brandon Aguilera, sidelined for the season with a cruciate ligament tear. Those are real losses, given that Miszta kept them in the Estoril win and Aguilera was one of their more consistent performers this season, though Francisco Petrasso already covers the build up role Aguilera vacated and Seabra's setup doesn't depend on either of them. Nacional's situation is considerably messier: Matheus Dias is suspended after accumulating cards, Léo Santos is out until around September 2027 with a knee and lateral ligament injury, Filipe Soares is expected back around 21 October and Ulisses is out long term with an ankle and foot fracture. Losing Dias hurts most because Nacional are already struggling to control games and removing their midfield cover only compounds that.

Seabra is expected to push Rio Ave toward more possession and structure, a deliberate shift away from the reactive style that produced those 4-0 beatings. The new system runs through Petrasso in deep build up, with Jalen Blesa leading the line, Diogo Bezerra looking for pockets behind the midfield block and Roland Galčík cutting in from the right to stretch the defensive line. Nacional under Santos have moved from a three centre back system to a four defender setup while adding high pressing to their gameplan, which is a reasonable enough idea executed at the worst possible moment: transitioning defensive shape mid season with multiple absentees is exactly the kind of thing that leaves you exposed on the counter. Without Dias anchoring midfield, Matchoi Djaló, Allen Obando, Min-kyu Song and Chiheb Labidi are being asked to press high and recover without anyone sitting to protect the shape.

The most telling duel is Blesa against Nacional's centre backs. If Petrasso can play quickly through the press and find Bezerra in the half spaces, Nacional's new back four won't have settled enough to handle it cleanly. Rio Ave's defensive record (one clean sheet in seven games) does suggest Santos's side could find joy on the break and that's worth keeping in mind but when Nacional press high with a makeshift midfield the space in behind opens for Blesa to run into rather than the other way around.

The last five meetings between these sides produced three draws, one Nacional win and one Rio Ave win: Nacional won 4-0 on 25 January 2026, then came draws at 1-1 on 17 August 2025 and 3-3 on 10 May 2025, before Rio Ave won 2-1 on 29 December 2024 and the previous encounter finished 1-1 on 31 July 2024.

Rio Ave to win 2-1. Seabra's arrival resets the tactical direction and a new manager in his first game has every reason to demand more from the group than his predecessor got. Nacional's injury and suspension list is longer and more damaging to their shape and five straight defeats with a reshaped defence and a suspended defensive midfielder tell you plainly where that squad is right now. Blesa and Bezerra exploit the half space gaps Santos's new back four hasn't had time to close, Santos's side get one back on the counter but can't force anything more and Seabra gets his first win while Nacional's problems get a little deeper.
