ELO head-to-head

How Rio Ave and Sporting Braga compare on rating, form and history.

Rio Ave and SC Braga meet on 8 November 2026 in Primeira Liga Matchday 11, with the two clubs in very different places in the table. Rio Ave are 16th with seven points from ten matches, already peering into the relegation zone, while Braga sit eighth on 14 points. Both clubs have changed managers recently, Vasco Seabra replacing Sotiris Silaidopoulos at Rio Ave on 4 October and Franclim Carvalho coming in at Braga on 20 October after Carlos Vicens was dismissed, so there is no meaningful head to head record between the two coaches and this one comes down to philosophy rather than personal history.

Rio Ave come into this having lost three of their last five league matches, most recently a 0-4 hammering away to Famalicão on 25 October, while Braga have not been much better, posting W L L L D in that same period with their latest outing a 1-2 loss to Gil Vicente on 19 October.

Seabra is without two players he would rather have available: Andreas Ntoi is suspended after a red card, which disrupts the back line and goalkeeper Cezary Miszta is out with a back injury. Losing your first choice keeper is never ideal and it is particularly awkward when the defensive structure is still being bedded in under a new manager. Braga are missing Sikou Niakaté through a long term Achilles injury, leaving Carvalho without the centre back who usually anchors their high defensive line.

Both managers line up in a 4-2-3-1 and that is roughly where the similarities end. Rio Ave under Seabra defend in a mid block, looking to win the ball in their own half and play direct on the transition. The back four, working with less familiar combinations without Ntoi and Miszta, leaves gaps between the defensive and midfield lines that Braga will look to exploit through Ricardo Horta, who drops between the lines to link midfield and attack, pulling markers out of position and creating overloads. The question for Seabra's double pivot is whether they can keep him quiet, because if Horta gets time on the ball in central areas, Rio Ave will struggle. Blesa, meanwhile, will need to do a lot with limited service and his best opportunity to hurt Braga is likely on the counter early before Carvalho's side settle into their rhythm.

If Braga dictate the game they will recycle patiently through the centre and look for Horta to find pockets inside Rio Ave's shape. The absence of a settled goalkeeper could hurt the hosts if Braga test them from distance or at set pieces. That said, if Rio Ave score first on the counter, Braga might be forced to abandon their possession game and expose themselves to exactly the kind of transitions they normally dictate.

Braga have the better of this fixture historically, with a 3-0 win in February 2026 and a 4-0 win in September 2024 as the clearest evidence.

With Miszta unavailable, Rio Ave lose their organiser on defensive corners, which is an opening Braga's taller outfield players will fancy. Rio Ave may try to exploit similar uncertainty in Braga's restructured centre back pairing by getting early deliveries into the box.

The managerial backdrop adds another layer of pressure to both dugouts. Seabra reportedly paid around one million euros to leave Arouca, which suggests both parties see this as a long term commitment, though that kind of goodwill evaporates fast when results do not follow. Carvalho was brought in precisely because Vicens ran out of goodwill with the board, so he needs an upturn quickly too.

Braga to win this 1-2. Without Niakaté, Horta remains more than capable of unpicking a Rio Ave defence missing both Ntoi and Miszta and the historical record in this fixture adds weight to the favourites. Rio Ave may well get one through Blesa on the counter but two goals for the visitors feels like the likelier outcome than a clean sheet.
