Dundee vs Rangers Prediction: Can McInnes' High-Press Overwhelm Pressley's Defensive Wall?

A tactical deep-dive into Dundee vs Rangers, exploring absences, recent momentum and why a 0-3 scoreline feels likely in this Scottish Premiership clash.

ELO head-to-head

How Dundee and Rangers compare on rating, form and history.

Dundee host Rangers at Dens Park on 17 October 2026 in Scottish Premiership Gameweek 9 and the two managers have never faced each other in a competitive fixture, so there is no prior tactical history for either side to work from. Dundee sit fourth with 13 points from eight games, chasing a third straight league win that would keep them in European contention, whereas Rangers arrive in second place with 19 points having put together an extended winning run that has kept the pressure on Celtic at the top.

Dundee's last five league outings read W W L D L, including a 2-1 win away at Falkirk on 10 October 2026 but inconsistent across the five games overall. Rangers, by contrast, have been immaculate: five wins from five, culminating in a 3-1 win at Kilmarnock on the same date, with Min-su Kim recycling possession and Naderi running in behind as the consistent attacking thread.

Steven Pressley, appointed in June 2025 after replacing Tony Docherty, has five players unavailable: Finlay Robertson (injury), Ryan Finnigan (ankle), Bobby Wales (ankle), Joe Westley (injury) and Simon Murray (injury), which removes most of their midfield and attacking options from the starting picture. Derek McInnes, who took charge in June 2026 after replacing Danny Röhl, is dealing with three absentees of his own, with Daisuke Yokota, Lawrence Shankland and Youssef Chermiti all ruled out through injury, Shankland having been central to the attack.

Pressley has built Dundee around a solid defensive structure anchored by the Bevan-Astley partnership, with Ashley Hay, Bradley Fink and Alan Forrest leading the attack. Without five injured players, Dundee will likely set up in a tight 4-2-3-1, channelling play towards the flanks where Forrest can get in behind Rangers' full backs. McInnes has Rangers pressing high and moving the ball quickly, with Ryan Naderi (four league goals already) and Djeidi Gassama leading the line while Min-su Kim controls the tempo and recycles possession in midfield. Losing Yokota, Shankland and Chermiti forces McInnes to lean more heavily on Naderi's finishing, though Kim, Naderi and Gassama give him enough to maintain the same high press approach.

The contest probably turns on Naderi against the Bevan-Astley centre back pairing: if Rangers break through centrally, conceding first almost certainly ends the contest given the head to head trend and Rangers' depth off the bench. If they cannot, Forrest getting one on one with a Rangers full back pushed high is Dundee's likeliest way to create and Kim's ability to control midfield tempo becomes the variable that sets the pace for everything else.

Rangers have not lost to Dundee in 20 meetings, winning 16 and drawing the other four, with Dundee's last victory coming in November 2017. Recent meetings have been one sided: Rangers won 3-0 in January 2026, 3-0 again in November 2025 and drew 1-1 in August 2025.

Dundee are particularly exposed to Rangers' set piece delivery given the number of aerial duellists they are missing and Naderi and Gassama still give Dundee's centre backs a live aerial and pace problem from dead balls, with McInnes' side having scored from set pieces during their current run. Dundee's own set piece threat is more limited without their full attacking complement, so clearing the first ball and transitioning quickly will matter more than any planned routine.

Rangers to win 3-0. Five straight wins without conceding more than once tells you where Dundee's evening is probably heading and five absences strip out too much midfield cover and attacking rotation to hold Rangers at bay. Naderi and Gassama retain enough between them to give Dundee's centre backs persistent problems throughout and a third likely comes from the bench as Dundee's thin squad runs out of cover late.
