How Hibernian and Falkirk compare on rating, form and history.

Bottom of the table Hibernian welcome Falkirk to Easter Road on 17 October 2026 in a Scottish Premiership Matchday 9 encounter both clubs desperately need to win. Hibernian sit 10th after eight games with seven points, Falkirk are 11th with six and the gap between them is nothing but goal difference, which tells you how much worse it could get for whichever side loses. The match also marks Marink Reedijk's first home fixture since replacing David Gray, who was sacked on 16 September 2026 with Reedijk appointed eight days later and a fanbase watching their fifth loss in six will want to see something different.

There is no real head to head history between Reedijk and Falkirk's John McGlynn, who has been in post since May 2022 and has had four years to build a settled system and shape his side around a clear identity, while Reedijk is still trying to embed his ideas into a struggling squad. Whether Reedijk can find a way through McGlynn's defensive shape before his own players fully buy in is genuinely unclear.

Hibernian's last five reads L D L L L, including a 0-1 defeat at Dundee United on 10 October 2026 that was Reedijk's debut. They are not creating enough and when they do, they are not converting, a grim combination for a side already near the bottom. Falkirk's run is L D W D L, their most recent result a 1-2 loss to Dundee on the same date, a result that continued a theme of dropped points from winning or level positions.

Hibernian are dealing with several absences that hit them at both ends of the pitch. Rocky Bushiri is out long term with an Achilles injury, Nicky Cadden is sidelined with a calf problem and Jacob Devaney is suspended after his red card against Dundee United, leaving Reedijk with a reshaped back four, a weakened left side and a midfield that has lost its protection all at once. Martin Boyle is the experienced penalty taker and top scorer, while Callum Wright and Owen Elding share three goals between them across all competitions. Falkirk, by contrast, have a full squad available, with Jacob Murrell, Brad Spencer and Ethan Ross all expected to feature.

Reedijk has signalled a more attacking approach built around a back four but Hibernian remain imprecise in the final third, which they cannot afford right now. Without Bushiri and Cadden, Falkirk can attack the space behind a makeshift left channel, especially if Ross is quick in behind and Devaney's suspension removes the midfield protection that might have shielded the exposed backline. Falkirk work through Spencer in midfield and look to Murrell for goals and they are vulnerable to set pieces and late goals, which means corners and free kicks around the box could matter more than open play build-up, with the left side so short of cover. The real question is whether Boyle can do enough against a compact block when the width from Cadden's side is simply gone. If Falkirk frustrate early and launch quickly through Murrell, they could leave with a point or more but the crowd will be on edge and Reedijk will know what a first home win means for his position, that weight falls on the home side as much as it helps them.

The recent record between these sides swings wildly: Hibernian won 3-1 in May 2026 then Falkirk turned around and won 4-1 in January 2026. The longer term picture shows Falkirk have a poor record at Easter Road and that may weigh on them.

Falkirk's weakness at set pieces is well documented and Boyle's delivery and penalty record from dead ball situations could separate the sides in a game that may not produce much open play quality. With Cadden missing and the left side thin, Hibernian need to manufacture those opportunities rather than wait for them. Neither side can afford to treat a point as progress, Hibernian need to pull clear of Falkirk, not stay level with them.

The prediction is Hibernian 2-1 Falkirk. The absences are real but home advantage and Boyle's dead ball quality give Hibernian the edge and Reedijk gets his first home win.
