How Kilmarnock and Motherwell compare on rating, form and history.

Kilmarnock host Motherwell at Rugby Park on 17 October 2026 in a gameweek 9 Scottish Premiership match that neither side can afford to drop points in. Kilmarnock sit 12th with five points from eight matches and a goal difference of minus 11, while Motherwell are three places better off in ninth on eight points but carrying a minus four goal difference of their own. Kilmarnock fell 3-1 to Rangers on 10 October and Motherwell lost 2-0 at Celtic the following day, which makes this feel like two teams simultaneously desperate for the same three points.

Neil McCann has been in the Kilmarnock dugout since 6 January 2026, while Alfred Johansson took over at Motherwell on 18 June 2026 after replacing Jens Berthel Askou, meaning both managers are still relatively new to the job and have barely crossed paths competitively.

Kilmarnock's last five league results read L D W D L, with just one win from eight Premiership games overall, whereas Motherwell have fared worse, losing their last four league matches in a row and remaining winless across all four. Both managers arrive in Ayrshire knowing that another defeat could pull either side into the relegation play off places.

Kilmarnock will be without Greg Kiltie through injury, whereas Motherwell's absentee list is considerably longer: Callum Hendry is out injured, Dylan Williams is sidelined with a hamstring problem expected to keep him out for weeks, Paul McGinn remains absent and Oscar Priestman is also unavailable. Losing four players from one squad will force Johansson into adjustments he would rather not have to make.

McCann tends to set Kilmarnock up in a 4-2-3-1, though the same side has conceded 18 goals in eight league games, which tells you the defensive structure is not holding together the way he would want. Joe Hugill leads the attack and will look to pin Motherwell's centre backs, leaving Erik Ring and Tyreece John-Jules to run channels around him, while Tom Lowery anchors midfield.

Johansson's Motherwell also line up in a 4-2-3-1 playing out from the back through Lukas Fadinger and Dylan Levitt, though 13 goals conceded already this season means that possession has not translated into defensive security. Alex Lowry is the main goal threat from deep, while Willy Vogt and Emmanuel Longelo stretch the channels and goalkeeper Alex Paulsen will need to organise a backline that has already lost several experienced figures to injury.

Without Kiltie, Hugill has less support in hold up play, which may push McCann towards a more direct approach to get the striker on the ball. Motherwell's four player absentee list strips them of depth at the back and in midfield, which may lead Johansson to lean on Longelo to carry the ball forward while Kilmarnock press higher to unsettle Motherwell's possession phases.

The Hugill versus Motherwell's centre backs duel will likely decide the shape of the game: if Hugill wins it consistently, he will open space for Ring and John-Jules to run onto, while Lowry picking up the ball in the gaps between Kilmarnock's midfield and defence could drag Lowery out of position and leave McCann's side exposed centrally.

Motherwell have won three of the last five meetings between these sides, including a 4-0 win in January 2026 and a 3-1 win in November 2025, either side of a 2-2 draw in August 2025. They also won 3-0 in May 2025, with Kilmarnock's only recent success coming in a 2-0 victory in April 2025, making the visitors the side with the stronger recent record.

With McGinn absent, Motherwell's organisational work from set pieces is likely to suffer and McCann will know it, especially with Hugill's aerial ability at dead balls. Both teams are also prone to conceding on the counter and after heavy defeats last weekend, neither coach can afford a slow start.

Expect a 2-2 draw. Kilmarnock can score through Hugill, Ring and John-Jules, particularly against a Motherwell side missing four players across defence and midfield but Lowry's movement from deep makes Motherwell dangerous against a Kilmarnock defence that has conceded 18 in eight. Kilmarnock may strike first through a quick transition, only for Motherwell to respond before the hosts find an equaliser late on.
