Motherwell host Hearts at Fir Park on 25 October 2026 in Scottish Premiership Gameweek 10. Motherwell are 10th with eight points from nine games and a goal difference of minus five, having lost five league matches in a row and needing points badly to avoid drifting further towards the relegation zone. Hearts sit third with 16 points and a plus five goal difference but a 1-7 loss to Celtic and a 0-2 Conference League defeat to Trabzonspor in mid-October have left them needing a response. Hearts have the better of recent meetings, for what it is worth: Motherwell 1-1 Hearts (May 2026), Hearts 3-1 Motherwell (April 2026), Motherwell 0-0 Hearts (November 2025), Hearts 3-3 Motherwell (August 2025) and Hearts 3-0 Motherwell (May 2025).
Neither manager has a head to head record to draw on, both having taken charge in the summer. Alfred Johansson replaced Jens Berthel Askou at Motherwell on 18 June 2026, while Wouter Vrancken arrived at Hearts on 25 June 2026 after Derek McInnes left.

Motherwell's last five league games have all ended in defeat, most recently a 2-3 home loss to Kilmarnock on 17 October 2026. That result told you everything about where this team is: they can score but they cannot hold a lead and they cannot defend under pressure. Hearts have been only marginally more stable, the Celtic thrashing and the Trabzonspor exit sitting either side of a domestic run that has made their third place feel less secure than it looks.
Motherwell are without Paul McGinn, who is recovering from knee surgery. Hearts are considerably more disrupted, with six players out: Craig Halkett's Achilles rupture is expected to keep him out until at least December, Harry Milne has a suspected ACL injury that could end his season and Christian Borchgrevink, Ageu, Blair Spittal and Tom Renaud are all sidelined, which forces Hearts to restructure their defensive shape while leaning harder on their attacking players to carry them through.
Motherwell typically set up in a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 built around high pressing and aggressive transitions, though five straight defeats have exposed how quickly the structure breaks down when opponents hold the ball well. Alex Lowry leads the scoring from central midfield or further forward, while Seb Palmer-Houlden gives them a physical option up front. Tawanda Maswanhise and Ibrahim Said operate wide, feeding Palmer-Houlden through quick combinations when the press works.
Hearts also use a 4-2-3-1 under Vrancken, whose system has looked vulnerable when opponents play direct over a high defensive line. The absences of Halkett and Milne make that worse: Halkett marshalled the defensive line and was Hearts' primary aerial presence at set pieces, while Milne's loss leaves the left side of the back four unsettled. Whoever fills in at left back has not started a league game this season and the central midfield will be asked to cover more ground than normal as a result. Josh McPake, Cláudio Braga, Calvin Miller and James Wilson have contributed over 12 combined league goals and Braga in particular tends to drop between the lines to receive and play forward, which should give Motherwell's double pivot real problems if Lowry pushes too high and leaves gaps behind him.
The most interesting individual contest is Lowry against Hearts' central midfield pair. If he gets time on the ball, he can drive forward and create space for Palmer-Houlden. On the other flank, Maswanhise will try to isolate whichever full back fills in for the absent Borchgrevink. Hearts' attackers, meanwhile, will target Motherwell's high defensive line on the counter, knowing the full backs will push forward in numbers from the first whistle given the pressure of five straight home losses.

With Hearts' defensive cover so thin, Motherwell will fancy their chances from set pieces, targeting Palmer-Houlden with near post deliveries and far post runs. Motherwell typically press highest in the first 15 minutes under Johansson and five straight losses will sharpen that urgency considerably but Hearts' front four have the quality and counter attacking structure to punish a team that commits forward in blocks.
Predicted score: 1-2. Motherwell should come out hard, with five straight home defeats pushing Palmer-Houlden or Lowry into an opener inside the first half hour for 1-0. Their defensive problems run too deep at this point, though and Hearts' front four are sharp enough on the counter to equalise before the break, probably through McPake or Braga finishing a swift transition. Miller overlapping to pull a centre back wide before Wilson arrives at the back post is the kind of move that settles these games and Motherwell, missing McGinn at the back and without a clean sheet in months, have no answer for it. Hearts win 1-2.
