In-depth La Liga Matchday 8 preview as Alavés host Atlético Madrid on 10 October 2026, with tactical breakdowns and a 1-2 score prediction.

ELO head-to-head

How Alaves and Atletico Madrid compare on rating, form and history.

Alavés welcome Atlético Madrid to Mendizorrotza on 10 October 2026 for a Matchday 8 fixture that the points table alone frames well enough: Atlético sit second on 16 points, trailing only Barcelona, while Alavés have collected 11 from seven to sit sixth.

Direct head-to-head data between Quique Sánchez Flores and Diego Simeone is thin, though Simeone's record against mid table opposition throughout his long tenure is well established. Alavés come into this on an uneven run, W W L L D across their last five - the 5-2 win over Osasuna showed what they can do when given space in behind but the back to back defeats against Racing and Valencia showed what happens when teams press them into long balls and deny their midfielders room to turn. A 0-0 at Athletic Club on 19 September was more encouraging, proving they can absorb sustained pressure and stay organised away from home. Atlético's last five reads W L W W W, with the derby win over Real Madrid the obvious headline. Goals from Álex Grimaldo and Jonathan David did the damage that day and four wins from five since that early season defeat have done nothing to dent Simeone's confidence going into this.

Quique Sánchez Flores, who took over on 3 March 2026 after Eduardo Coudet's departure, has a genuine defensive crisis to manage here. Facundo Garcés is out with a torn cruciate while Abde Rebbach is missing through a thigh problem and Miguel Rodríguez remains sidelined by long term cruciate damage, with Ville Koski also a doubt through quad and hamstring concerns. That leaves the backline thin and places more responsibility on Lucas Boyé and Toni Martínez up front.

Simeone, manager since December 2011, has his own concerns but far more cushion to absorb them. Pablo Barrios is out with a muscle problem while Alexander Sørloth is doubtful and Álex Grimaldo carries a thigh and quad concern though he is expected to be available. With Julián Álvarez, Jonathan David, Álex Baena and Lee Kang-in all in the squad, the options available to Simeone dwarf what Flores can call on.

Alavés tend to line up in a 5-3-2, sitting in a compact block and looking to exploit set piece situations while hitting Atlético on the break with Boyé running off the last defender. With Garcés and Rebbach both absent, the back five will need to hold their shape carefully to stop Atlético's wide attackers getting in behind the wing backs and Boyé's movement off the shoulder of the centre backs is their clearest route to goal, with Martínez alongside him. Atlético, meanwhile, are built around winning the ball high and making play in tight spaces uncomfortable by punishing transitions almost immediately. The absence of Barrios disrupts their midfield slightly and if Grimaldo is not fully fit the left flank becomes more conservative but Álvarez and David give Simeone two independent outlets up front while Baena and Lee Kang-in are capable of finding pockets between a low block. The individual battles that will likely decide things are Boyé against Atlético's central defenders in hold up situations, Grimaldo's overlapping runs against Alavés' right sided wing back and David's movement forcing Alavés to choose between tracking him tightly and leaving space for midfield runners.

Atlético have 11 wins from 18 meetings between these sides and the last encounter on 18 January 2026 ended 1-0 to the visitors. Alavés have been organised from dead balls at home but Garcés' absence removes their most reliable aerial defender from those situations, which matters given that Atlético, with Grimaldo and Baena involved in delivery, are dangerous from wide deliveries and short corner routines.

Atlético have the squad depth to unpick Alavés' shape even with Barrios out and doubts over Grimaldo and Sørloth and Alavés will cause problems on the counter but Simeone's teams have the tactical discipline to manage a narrow lead. 1-2 to the visitors.
