Osasuna vs Racing Santander Prediction: Arrasate Return Offers Survival Lifeline

Osasuna welcome Racing Santander in a vital La Liga relegation scrap. Jagoba Arrasate's first game back brings tactical discipline to a side desperate for points against a creative but leaky away side.

ELO head-to-head

How Osasuna and Racing Santander compare on rating, form and history.

Osasuna host Racing Santander at El Sadar on 18 October 2026 in a Matchweek 9 La Liga fixture both clubs genuinely need to win. Eight points and a goal difference of minus ten apiece after eight games, neither side is anywhere near safe and that pressure is going to shape every decision both managers make. Jagoba Arrasate has no meaningful head to head record with José Alberto López to draw on, so this one starts from nothing.

Osasuna have been dreadful lately, going five matches without a win and conceding in bunches, capped by the 2-5 hammering at Real Betis on 11 October 2026. Racing are only marginally better though, their 2-2 draw against Valencia on the same date sandwiched between losses and a single victory. The open, chaotic football both sides have been playing is exactly what Arrasate will be trying to dismantle from his first day in charge.

Arrasate takes charge after Ramis was sacked following the Betis thrashing and inherits a squad already stretched by injuries. Aimar Oroz (thigh) is out until around 19 October, Raúl Moro faces a similar problem likely keeping him absent until around 26 October, Romain Del Castillo is sidelined with a hamstring issue and Jorge Herrando is also unavailable, which strips the squad of the width and rotation Arrasate would normally build around. Racing travel with their own concerns: Simon Eriksson out with shoulder tendonitis, Andrés Martín unavailable after a knee injury and Matteo Prati a doubt with a thigh complaint. Both coaches are working with reduced squads specifically in the midfield and wide areas.

Osasuna's identity under Arrasate has always been built around keeping their shape and defending from a low block and his return almost certainly means pulling away from the open, porous style that produced those heavy defeats. Ante Budimir is the main attacking outlet with Rubén García driving play behind him but losing Oroz, Moro and Del Castillo at once strips the attack of variety and cover in one go. Racing look to play at pace under López, with Vicente and Zabiri their main outlets going forward, though their away defensive record is poor and losing Eriksson and Martín leaves Vicente carrying most of the creative load with far less support than López would want.

With so many bodies missing on both sides, Osasuna's clearest route to three points is to hold their defensive shape, get Budimir working against Racing's back line on set pieces and second balls and not give away the open spaces Racing would need on the break. Both teams have been vulnerable to set pieces this season and with creative players absent across the pitch, dead ball situations may prove decisive. Racing are still without an away win this season and López needs Vicente and Zabiri to produce something despite the options around them narrowing by the day.

The head to head is thin: the most recent meeting was a pre season friendly on 24 July 2026 when Osasuna won 2-0, which tells you nothing useful about a relegation flavoured La Liga fixture. Osasuna 2-1 Racing Santander. Arrasate's arrival should restore enough defensive structure to let Budimir operate against a Racing defence that has struggled badly on its travels and the combined absences of Eriksson, Martín and a doubtful Prati remove Racing's most dangerous runners in behind. Vicente and Zabiri on the counter still make this a nervy watch but Osasuna at home, with a familiar manager and the memory of that Betis capitulation still raw, have enough to win it.
