ELO head-to-head

How Valencia and Real Sociedad compare on rating, form and history.

Valencia host Real Sociedad at Mestalla on 20 September 2026, a La Liga Matchday 7 fixture that pits a side sitting 19th with four points and a manager sacked six games in against one that has been steadily finding its feet since Pellegrino Matarazzo arrived in December 2025. Óscar Sánchez took charge of Valencia on 13 September, replacing Carlos Corberán, while Matarazzo has had the better part of nine months to settle his approach at Sociedad, who sit 12th with seven points and have no managerial head to head with Sánchez to draw on.

Valencia's recent form tells a grim story: four defeats and a 1-0 win over Alavés, with a 0-5 hammering at Barcelona sitting somewhere in the middle of that run. Sociedad's form has been more mixed, with losses to Atlético Madrid and Bournemouth in the Europa League alongside enough wins to keep them in mid table.

The injury situation makes Sánchez's job considerably harder. Diego López, Mouctar Diakhaby, Umar Sadiq, César Tárrega, Dimitri Foulquier, José Copete and Sergi Canós are all out, stripping the squad of their two senior centre backs, their backup striker and Canós from the wing, which means Duro carries the whole attacking burden alone. Real Sociedad have only Álvaro Odriozola sidelined, so Matarazzo can largely name the side he wants and keep his high pressing structure intact.

Sánchez has Valencia sitting compact and looking to hit on the counter through Hugo Duro and Arnaut Danjuma, with José Gayà organising the makeshift back four from left back and Pepelu anchoring midfield. Matarazzo has Sociedad playing a possession heavy, high pressing game, with Mikel Oyarzabal as the creative engine and Luka Sučić making late runs into the box alongside him. Jon Aramburu is expected to feature in defence.

A backline assembled from what is available is where Valencia are most vulnerable and the battles worth watching reflect that clearly: Duro against Sociedad's centre backs, where his movement could open space for Danjuma in behind, Pepelu trying to cut off the supply to Oyarzabal and Sučić, and Danjuma against the Sociedad left back, which could be Valencia's clearest route to something on the counter.

The last meeting between these two, in May 2026, ended 4-3 to Valencia. Set pieces may be their best route to goal again here, with Duro a genuine aerial threat at dead balls given how little they are likely to create from open play.

We're going with 1-1. Valencia's injury hit defence leaves them exposed to Sociedad's press but Sánchez has set them up to be difficult to break down, with set pieces their likeliest route to goal. A side as depleted as Valencia can still nick one from a corner.
