How Blackburn Rovers and Cardiff City compare on rating, form and history.

Blackburn Rovers welcome Cardiff City to Ewood Park on 10 October 2026. Sitting 16th with nine points from eight games, Blackburn need a good home performance to stay out of the bottom three, while Cardiff, in 21st with just seven points from eight, are in real danger of slipping into the relegation zone.

Tony Mowbray took charge of Blackburn on 5 June 2026 after Michael O'Neill's exit and he faces Brian Barry-Murphy, appointed by Cardiff on 1 July 2025 following the departure of Omer Riza and still in his first senior Championship role. They have never met as managers. Mowbray favours a compact, structured defensive block whereas Barry-Murphy has built Cardiff around sustained possession and those two philosophies should pull this game in opposite directions from the first whistle.

Blackburn's five game run of D-W-L-L-D is difficult to put a positive spin on. The 3-1 home win over Millwall on 12 September was the standout, though a 1-2 defeat at Sheffield United three days earlier had interrupted any rhythm and a 2-2 draw at Portsmouth on 19 September closed out the sequence. Cardiff's W-L-D-L-L is harder to spin still, with three losses in their last four games. A 3-1 win at Charlton on 19 September offered brief relief but a 0-1 home defeat to Bolton brought things back to earth quickly.

Scott Wharton is a doubt for Blackburn with an Achilles issue, while Lewis Miller is ruled out after an Achilles rupture sustained around November 2026, leaving Mowbray short of senior options across the back line. Cardiff's problems run deeper: Krystian Bielik is suspended for two games following an incident against Portsmouth in September, Callum Chambers is out after failing to return to training and Yousef Salech is doubtful. Bielik controls Cardiff's defensive shape in midfield, screening the back four and organising the press, so his suspension pulls out one of the main structural pillars of Barry-Murphy's setup. Losing Salech on top of that leaves Cardiff with limited attacking cover.

Without Wharton and Miller, Blackburn's back line may drop deeper still, which suits Mowbray's preference for a compact defensive block and invites Cardiff to commit men forward, potentially leaving space in behind for Todd Cantwell to exploit on the transition. Oladapo Afolayan carries the pace in wide areas on the break, while Andri Gudjohnsen leads the line and drops to link when possession is secured.

Cardiff average 64.8% possession this season and lead the Championship in shots and shots on target. Barry-Murphy will want to express that at Ewood Park, using Jack Moylan, already on three goals and Rubin Colwill in behind to pull Blackburn's back line apart through the wide channels. But Bielik's suspension cuts the nerve of Cardiff's press: without him organising the midfield structure, Blackburn should find cleaner transition moments than they would normally get. The Cantwell-Colwill duel in the middle third looks like the contest most likely to settle tempo, while Afolayan's movement against Cardiff's full backs will test whether the visitors can hold their high line. With Salech doubtful, Moylan may be asked to lead the line on his own, simplifying Blackburn's defensive task and altering the attacking shape Barry-Murphy has built the season around. Blackburn will likely look to absorb early pressure before hitting Cardiff in the spaces their high press opens up, specifically behind the wide midfielders and in the channels that Cardiff's full backs vacate when they push forward.

Blackburn lead the all time series with around 22 wins to Cardiff's 19 across roughly 60 meetings. Cardiff won 2-1 at Ewood Park in March 2025 but Blackburn have won four of the previous five home league encounters against the Welsh side.

Cantwell's delivery from dead balls has been one of Blackburn's most consistent sources of danger this season and Cardiff's aggressive pressing can leave gaps for quick free kick routines and long throws, something Blackburn have exploited in previous meetings. Cardiff's shot volume means they will create chances, though how many they convert will depend partly on how much of Bielik's organisational quality the rest of the midfield can absorb.

Blackburn 2-1 Cardiff City. Mowbray's compact setup should frustrate the visitors' possession game long enough to score on the counter or from set pieces, with Cantwell and Afolayan well placed to exploit the space Cardiff's high press creates. Cardiff will still create and Moylan and Colwill give them enough to score but Bielik's absence disrupts the structure that makes Cardiff's press work and Blackburn's record of four wins from the last five home meetings between these sides reflects something real about how the dynamic plays out at Ewood Park. The injury lists and the form both favour the home side.
